What is a remote contract reliability engineer?

Remote Contract Reliability Engineers are professionals who work remotely, usually on a contract basis, to ensure that systems, equipment, or software operate reliably and efficiently. Their main focus is on analyzing data, troubleshooting issues, and implementing improvements to enhance the dependability and performance of products or processes. They collaborate with teams virtually to identify potential failures, recommend solutions, and help organizations minimize downtime and maintenance costs. Their work spans various industries such as manufacturing, technology, and energy, and typically involves using specialized tools and methodologies to predict and prevent problems before they occur.

How does a remote contract reliability engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams and stakeholders?

As a Remote Contract Reliability Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with on-site teams through virtual meetings, project management platforms, and real-time data sharing tools. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll provide recommendations, troubleshoot issues, and review maintenance or performance data remotely. You may also participate in regular status updates and coordinate with cross-functional teams—such as operations, maintenance, and safety—to implement reliability improvements and ensure asset uptime. Successful remote collaboration often relies on proactive communication and clear documentation of your analyses and recommendations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote contract reliability engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in reliability engineering, failure analysis, and maintenance planning, often supported by a degree in engineering and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with reliability analysis software (like ReliaSoft), asset management systems, and certifications such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation skills are essential for effectively collaborating and delivering results in a remote, contract-based environment. These skills ensure the engineer can optimize system reliability, reduce downtime, and meet client expectations efficiently from a remote location.

Job description

Job Overview:

Pay Range: $52.70hr - $57.70hr

Requirement/Must Have:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in semiconductor supply chain R&D, component/product engineering, or hardware/reliability engineering, with at least 2 years of direct exposure to power management or interface/analog-mixed-signal IC sourcing or qualification.
  • Technical knowledge: Analog and mixed-signal IC technology; power delivery and PMIC/regulator fundamentals; high-speed interface signaling (e.g., PCIe/NVMe re-timers, re-drivers, level shifters) and signal/power integrity.
  • Assembly/test knowledge: Familiarity with OSAT assembly and final-test flow and how process and test quality impact downstream yield and field reliability.
  • Communication: Able to present supply risk and recommendations clearly to senior leadership and to coordinate effectively with international suppliers across time zones.
  • Remote effectiveness: Demonstrated ability to work independently and stay aligned in a distributed, remote environment.
  • Work authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Role may be subject to U.S. export-control requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, qualify, and manage a base of power and interface IC suppliers and their OSAT partners to ensure technical capacity, quality, and reliability targets are met.
  • Establish and maintain technical supplier scorecards tracking OTD, quality (PPM/DPPM), yield, reliability, and responsiveness.
  • Drive continuous-improvement initiatives with strategic suppliers and OSATs to improve yield and cycle time.
  • Manage dual-source and second-source strategies to mitigate single-source risk and ensure component supply resilience.
  • Coordinate technical reviews between the organization's hardware/package design teams and supplier applications and process teams; manage device selection, process/technology, and package/revision trade-offs against reliability, yield, and schedule.
  • Partner with Supplier Quality Engineering on power and interface IC excursions: containment, 8D root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and re-qualification with supplier and OSAT process teams.
  • Champion DFM and design-for-reliability feedback loops between suppliers/OSATs and the organization's hardware and package design teams.
  • Represent the power and interface IC supply chain in NPI program reviews.
  • Interface routinely with Hardware Design Engineering, Signal/Power Integrity, Package Engineering, IC suppliers, OSATs, Quality, Logistics, and counterparts.
  • Serve as the organization's escalation lead for power and interface IC supply issues, bridging U.S. design/operations stakeholders with Asia-based suppliers and OSAT partners across time zones and cultural contexts.

Nice to Have:

  • Master's degree in Engineering (electrical, materials, or related field).
  • Direct experience with PMICs, voltage regulators, load switches, level shifters, re-timers/re-drivers, or other power and interface ICs used in storage, server, or networking hardware.
  • Established working relationships with tier-1 power and interface IC suppliers and OSATs in the U.S., Taiwan, Korea, or Japan.
  • Familiarity with the organization's product families and SSD hardware/power architecture requirements.
  • Six Sigma Green/XX Belt certification.
  • Conversational Mandarin, XX, or XX — a plus for engagement with Asia-based suppliers and OSAT partners.
  • Prior experience collaborating remotely across U.S. and Asia time zones with international semiconductor partners.
