What is a remote contract developer?

A Remote Contract Developer is a software professional who is hired on a contract basis to work on specific projects or tasks for a company, but performs their work entirely remotely, often from their own home or a location of their choosing. These developers may work for multiple clients at once and are typically responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code according to project requirements. The remote aspect allows for flexibility in work location and hours, while the contract nature means employment is usually for a fixed term or until the completion of a particular project. Remote contract developers often need strong communication and time-management skills to coordinate effectively with distributed teams.

How do remote contract developers typically communicate and collaborate with clients and team members?

Remote Contract Developers often rely on a combination of communication tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms like Jira or Trello to stay connected with clients and colleagues. Regular check-ins, daily standups, and clear documentation are essential for staying aligned on project goals and deadlines. Since team members may be spread across different time zones, flexibility and proactive communication are key to ensuring smooth collaboration and successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote contract developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract Developer, you need strong programming skills, experience with relevant frameworks or languages, and a proven track record in software development projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and collaborative tools such as Jira or Slack is typically required. Excellent time management, proactive communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for remote work success. These qualities enable developers to deliver high-quality results independently, maintain client satisfaction, and collaborate effectively from a distance.

Job description

Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada

About our Vancouver Office

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, Teckโ€™s Corporate Office sits in one of Canadaโ€™s most culturally diverse cities.

Surrounded by world-renowned nature and globally inspired cuisine, the office brings together many of Teckโ€™s corporate functions - all working toward Teckโ€™s purpose of providing the essential resources the world relies on.

Reporting to the MIS Lead, the Data Developer, MIS (Data) is responsible for supporting the development of reliable centralized site data required for Operations performance reporting.

This role will work closely with site teams, MIS, TDS, and Data Governance to understand operational data sources, document business logic, identify data gaps, and support the transition from manual reporting processes to repeatable, semi-automated data flows.

The role is a key part of building MIS as the Operations Performance Intelligence capability, ensuring site data is reliable, consistent, and ready to support Site OPRs, Enterprise Performance Reporting, operational analytics, and future Enterprise Data Platform transition.

This is a 6 month contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Work with site teams to understand current operational reporting processes, data sources, business logic, and data gaps.
  • Support sites in improving the data required for reliable reporting, business decisions, and future EDP transition.
  • Document source-to-report data flows, transformations, assumptions, ownership, and business logic for critical operational metrics.
  • Support development and sustainment of centralized site data where central support is not yet available.
  • Define site data requirements needed to support Site OPRs and Enterprise Performance Reporting in a consistent and repeatable way.
  • Identify data quality, process, ownership, and sustainment gaps that impact operational and enterprise reporting.
  • Translate operational reporting needs into clear business and technical requirements for TDS, EDP, and Data Governance teams.
  • Support transition activities to ensure site data logic, documentation, and requirements are ready for long-term sustainment.
  • Work cross-functionally to reduce manual reporting effort and improve consistency across sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Data Analytics, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with operational data, reporting, analytics, business process improvement, or data enablement.
  • Strong understanding of how business processes translate into data, reporting, and analytics requirements.
  • Experience documenting data flows, business logic, reporting requirements, data gaps, and process dependencies.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, Databricks, Power BI, Excel, VBA, Power Query, or similar data tools is an asset.
  • Mining, processing, maintenance, operations, or heavy industry experience is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work through ambiguous data environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and support work across multiple sites.

Pay Range: CAD $null - $null per year
