Remote Computer Science Student information

What is a remote computer science student?

A remote computer science student is someone who is studying computer science online, rather than attending classes in person. This allows them to access coursework, lectures, and assignments through digital platforms from anywhere with an internet connection. Remote students often interact with professors and classmates via email, discussion boards, or video calls. This flexible learning format can be beneficial for those balancing other commitments or living far from campus.

What are some effective strategies for staying engaged and productive as a remote computer science student?

As a remote computer science student, maintaining engagement and productivity can be challenging due to fewer in-person interactions and the need for self-discipline. Setting a structured daily schedule, actively participating in virtual discussions, and regularly collaborating with peers on group projects can help. Utilizing online resources, seeking feedback from instructors, and joining virtual study groups are also effective ways to stay connected and motivated. It's important to create a dedicated workspace and set clear goals to manage your time efficiently and avoid distractions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer science student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Science Student, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by enrollment in a computer science degree program. Familiarity with coding platforms (like GitHub), learning management systems (such as Canvas or Blackboard), and collaboration tools (like Zoom and Slack) is common. Self-motivation, time management, and strong written communication skills are essential soft skills for remote study success. These competencies ensure effective learning, collaboration, and progress in a virtual academic environment.

The main difference between a Remote Computer Science Student and a Remote Software Developer lies in their experience and employment status. Students focus on learning and internships, often without professional certifications, while software developers are experienced professionals working on projects. Both roles may work remotely, but their responsibilities and career stages differ.

Can I work remotely with a remote computer science student?

A remote computer science student can often work remotely in internships, part-time roles, or freelance projects that match their skills and schedule. Many tech companies and startups offer remote opportunities that require knowledge of programming languages, collaboration tools, and self-motivation. However, eligibility may depend on the employer's requirements and the student's availability.

Schedule: Part-Time, approximately 20 hours/week

Position Overview
REV is seeking an experienced Enterprise Architect to provide program-level architectural leadership for a large-scale enterprise technology modernization initiative.
The Enterprise Architect will maintain the overarching architecture across applications, data, infrastructure, security, integrations, and business processes while ensuring technical decisions align with enterprise standards, modernization objectives, regulatory requirements, and long-term sustainability.
This is a senior-level architecture position requiring strong technical leadership, the ability to evaluate complex enterprise environments, and the ability to communicate architectural decisions to both technical and executive stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain enterprise architecture principles, patterns, standards, and reference models.
  • Lead solution and architecture design reviews across technical teams, vendors, and business stakeholders.
  • Define architectural principles, governance expectations, and reference models that support modernization objectives.
  • Evaluate technology platforms, vendors, architectural options, and technical trade-offs.
  • Identify architectural gaps, redundancies, risks, technical debt, and opportunities for modernization or consolidation.
  • Ensure architecture decisions incorporate security, privacy, compliance, and risk-management requirements.
  • Provide architectural leadership across applications, data, infrastructure, cloud, integrations, APIs, and security services.
  • Support cloud modernization, microservices, serverless, API, data, and infrastructure architecture decisions.
  • Lead cross-team alignment among technical teams, vendors, business stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint reviews, demonstrations, design sessions, and architecture checkpoints.
  • Oversee architecture documentation, including architecture diagrams, reference architectures, Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), runbooks, and lifecycle documentation.
  • Ensure architectural decisions support scalability, interoperability, maintainability, security, and long-term operational readiness.
  • Analyze existing and legacy environments and recommend modernization strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to architects, developers, engineers, and project teams.
  • Support complex technical troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and long-term remediation strategies.
  • Provide architectural input into vendor evaluations, solution proposals, technical deliverables, and implementation decisions.
  • Communicate architectural risks, decisions, recommendations, and dependencies clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Bachelor's degree must include at least 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of computer science coursework.
  • Candidate must be able to provide documentation verifying the degree and the specific computer science coursework completed if requested.
  • 7+ years of professional IT experience involving information technology analysis, system maintenance, troubleshooting, problem resolution, system design, application development, or database development.
  • 5+ years of hands-on technical architecture experience with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience with Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile/iterative development methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience designing end-to-end architecture for large-scale applications and enterprise infrastructure.
  • Experience evaluating and recommending technical architectures, platforms, vendors, and technology solutions based on business requirements and technical trade-offs.
  • Working knowledge of microservice architecture, including the ability to evaluate benefits, limitations, and implementation trade-offs.
  • Experience with security architecture principles, Identity and Access Management (IAM), authentication, authorization, and secure API patterns.
  • Experience applying security standards and controls such as NIST, Zero Trust, encryption, and enterprise security controls.
  • Experience working with data models, data flows, metadata, data governance, data quality, and data migration/conversion practices.
  • Experience designing or supporting APIs, integration patterns, messaging frameworks, and service-oriented architectures.
  • Familiarity with API gateways, interface specifications, and modern integration platforms.
  • Strong experience with one or more modern development languages, including Java, C#, NodeJS, and/or Python.
  • Experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP cloud technologies.
  • Experience with serverless technologies such as Azure Functions, AWS Lambda, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with containerized technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Must be comfortable working as an individual 1099 Independent Contractor.
  • Must be willing and able to work onsite in Washington State as required by the engagement.
  • Must be able to complete any required background screening, security training, confidentiality requirements, and system-access requirements associated with the engagement.
Preferred Certifications

  • Public-sector or highly regulated technology environments.
  • Experience working with complex vendor ecosystems and multiple technical workstreams.
  • Experience establishing reusable architecture patterns, standards, and reference architectures.
