Remote Computer Science Graduate information

What is a remote computer science graduate?

Remote computer science graduates are individuals who have completed a degree in computer science and work in jobs that allow them to perform their duties from locations outside of a traditional office, often from home. These graduates leverage their programming, problem-solving, and analytical skills to contribute to software development, data analysis, IT support, and other technical roles remotely. The demand for remote computer science professionals has grown due to advancements in technology and the increasing acceptance of remote work by employers. Remote roles can offer greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer science graduate?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Science Graduate, a strong foundation in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), algorithms, data structures, and a relevant computer science degree are essential. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and common development tools is typically required. Strong communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating effectively and staying productive in a remote environment. These skills and qualities enable graduates to successfully contribute to distributed teams, solve complex problems, and adapt to the dynamic demands of remote tech roles.

How do remote computer science graduates typically collaborate with team members and stay engaged while working from home?

Remote computer science graduates often use a range of digital tools like Slack, Zoom, and GitHub to stay connected with their teams, participate in code reviews, and attend virtual meetings. Regular check-ins and agile stand-ups help maintain communication and ensure everyone is aligned on project goals. Many companies also encourage open channels for questions and knowledge sharing, which helps new graduates feel supported and integrated. Staying proactive in communication and seeking mentorship opportunities can further enhance engagement and career growth when working remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Computer Science Graduate vs Remote Software Developer?

AspectRemote Computer Science GraduateRemote Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related fieldProven coding skills, often with a degree or equivalent experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, project-based, often internships or apprenticeshipsFull-time, collaborative coding environment, often with team tools
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, research labsSoftware firms, tech companies, SaaS providers
Search & Comparison IntentEntry-level roles, internships, career startersDevelopment roles, coding projects, software engineering

The main difference is that a Remote Computer Science Graduate is typically an entry-level candidate with a degree seeking initial roles, while a Remote Software Developer is a more experienced professional actively coding and developing software. Both roles often overlap in skills and work environment, but the Software Developer role usually requires proven coding experience beyond the degree.

Job description

At Fresche Solutions, we offer a great work-life balance with flexible hours. You can work remotely from anywhere in North America or from one of our offices-the decision is yours.

Why Join Fresche? We believe in leading our industry through innovation, delivering exceptional outcomes, and helping our customers achieve lasting success. Our goal is to ensure that 100% of our customers are referenceable. Our distinct company culture has made Fresche a top employer and a trusted partner to our customers for eleven consecutive years. We work hard to ensure that our values are reflected in everything we do-from setting priorities and developing ideas to delivering solutions and supporting our clients.

About the Role As a Solution Architect, you will play a pivotal role in the design, delivery, and evolution of complex digital transformation initiatives. You will own the technical solution from initial discovery and architecture through implementation, optimization, and project completion.

This position has a particular focus onapplication and system performance optimization across Java, IBM i/AS400, and DB2 environments. We are looking for someone who can evaluate performance at both the application and operating-system levels, identify bottlenecks, and architect practical solutions that improve scalability, responsiveness, stability, and overall system efficiency.

You will work across multiple projects, conducting research, facilitating technical workshops, documenting solutions, and presenting and defending architectural decisions to clients and internal stakeholders. You will also act as a senior escalation point for complex technical matters and help ensure the successful completion of each project phase.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Own the technical solution throughout the full project lifecycle, ensuring alignment with client requirements, business objectives, and project goals.
  • Assess and optimize application and system performance acrossJava, IBM i/AS400, and DB2 environments.
  • Analyze performance bottlenecks at the application, database, operating-system, and infrastructure levels.
  • Recommend and implement strategies to improve application responsiveness, transaction throughput, resource utilization, scalability, and system stability.
  • Review Java application behaviour, including memory utilization, garbage collection, threading, connection management, and application-server performance.
  • Evaluate IBM i system performance, including workload management, job activity, CPU and memory consumption, subsystem configuration, and system resource utilization.
  • Assess DB2 database performance, including query execution, indexing, access paths, SQL efficiency, locking, database configuration, and workload behaviour.
  • Research and evaluate technical options to inform solution architecture and modernization strategies.
  • Architect solutions spanning Java, PHP, IBM i, DB2, and other relevant technologies based on the unique requirements of each engagement.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into scalable, maintainable, and supportable solution designs.
  • Lead technical discovery sessions, architecture workshops, and solution-design discussions with clients and internal teams.
  • Present, explain, and defend architectural recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Produce clear architecture documentation, technical specifications, diagrams, recommendations, and implementation roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with development, infrastructure, database, delivery, and client teams to support successful implementation.
  • Champion the effective use of architecture standards, development tools, performance-monitoring tools, and delivery best practices.
  • Serve as a senior technical escalation point during discovery, development, testing, deployment, and production-support activities.
  • Balance modernization objectives with the realities of complex legacy and mission-critical environments.

What You Must Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of hands-on experience designing and architecting large-scale, web-based enterprise systems.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Solution Architect, Technical Architect, or senior application architect.
  • Expert-level web application development experience using technologies such as Java, PHP, or comparable enterprise application platforms.
  • Strong experience diagnosing and resolving complex application and system performance issues.
  • Hands-on knowledge ofJava performance optimization, including JVM behaviour, memory management, garbage collection, threading, application servers, and application profiling.
  • Experience assessing performance withinIBM i, iSeries, or AS400 environments.
  • Strong understanding ofDB2 performance optimization, including SQL tuning, indexing, query plans, access paths, locking, and database workload analysis.
  • Ability to investigate performance issues across multiple layers, including application code, database, operating system, middleware, and infrastructure.
  • Experience designing solutions for complex, integrated, and business-critical application environments.
  • Strong technical documentation, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and defend technical decisions with clients, development teams, and senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and provide architectural leadership across multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with RPG applications and IBM i modernization initiatives.
  • Experience modernizing or integrating legacy IBM i applications with Java, PHP, APIs, web applications, or cloud-based platforms.
  • Familiarity with IBM i performance-monitoring and diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with application profiling, database monitoring, capacity planning, and performance-testing tools.
  • Knowledge of cloud, hybrid-cloud, containerized, or distributed application architectures.
  • Experience working in consulting, professional services, or client-facing delivery environments.

Employment Details This is a permanent, full-time position. We would also consider an experienced contractor for an initial one-year engagement.
