What is a remote computer operator?

A Remote Computer Operator is a professional who monitors and manages computer systems, networks, or servers from a remote location. Their responsibilities often include running scheduled tasks, troubleshooting system issues, maintaining system logs, and ensuring the smooth operation of IT infrastructure. Remote Computer Operators typically work for businesses with 24/7 IT needs and may provide support outside regular business hours. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly to system alerts or failures.

What does a remote computer operator do?

As a remote computer operator, you work from home to supervise and manage computer systems. Your duties may involve setting user control for devices, running computer tasks, overseeing system operations, identifying malfunctions, recording assignments completed and issues addressed, loading files onto storage media, checking for viruses, and separating and sorting program outputs. You also monitor the server and network to ensure they run properly, upgrade software, and maintain machine operations. It’s your job to communicate with the IT department through the web and provide support to network administrators who handle computer equipment issues and maintenance responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Operator, you need a solid understanding of computer systems, data entry, and troubleshooting, often supported by an associate degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with remote desktop software, operating systems like Windows or Linux, and ticketing systems such as ServiceNow is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure efficient system operations, quick problem resolution, and clear collaboration with team members, which are essential for minimizing downtime and supporting business continuity.

What are some common challenges faced by remote computer operators, and how can they be managed?

Remote computer operators often encounter challenges such as managing system issues without on-site support, ensuring secure and reliable remote connections, and maintaining effective communication with IT teams. To manage these, it's important to develop strong troubleshooting skills, stay updated on cybersecurity best practices, and utilize collaboration tools like chat platforms and ticketing systems to coordinate with colleagues. Regular training and establishing clear protocols for remote problem-solving can help operators stay productive and responsive.

What is the difference between Remote Computer Operator vs Data Entry Clerk?

AspectRemote Computer OperatorData Entry Clerk

Remote Computer Operators and Data Entry Clerks both handle data-related tasks, but Remote Computer Operators focus on managing and monitoring computer systems remotely, requiring some technical knowledge. Data Entry Clerks primarily input data into systems with minimal technical skills. While both roles can be remote, the Remote Computer Operator role often involves overseeing system performance and troubleshooting, making it more technical than data entry.

Job description

Company Description

Xplor Technologies powers the experiences at the heart of everyday life. Through modern vertical software, embedded payments, and AI-powered capabilities, we help businesses in fitness, recreation, golf and club, field services, laundry, education, and other membership-based and service-based industries simplify operations, uncover insights, and elevate customer and member experiences.

Job Description

About the opportunity

Xplor is building a high-impact Transformation team to drive strategic change across the business. As Director, Transformation, you will play a role leading workstreams end-to-end and engaging directly with senior stakeholders — spanning business integration, systems and process modernization, and the practical application of AI across customer-facing functions. Reporting to the Chief Transformation Officer, you will help bring structure, rigor, and momentum to work that is foundational to Xplor's next phase of growth.

This is a fixed-term role for 12 months, with the potential for extension. The Transformation team is designed as a proving ground: our hope and intent is that, at the end of the term, you'll move into a functional leadership role elsewhere in the business — bringing the relationships, context, and credibility you've built with you. Many of the skills and the visibility you'll gain here are hard to get anywhere else in the organization.

A core thread of this role is helping shape how AI reshapes customer-facing work at Xplor — rethinking how customer support, customer success, and sales operate in an AI-enabled world. You won't just support this shift; you'll help design it.

You'll work across a mix of transformation initiatives that could include things like integrating newly acquired businesses, modernizing core systems and tools, and applying AI to reshape how customer support, success, and sales operate.
Depending on scope, your work may span:

  • Own transformation projects from design through implementation and measurement of long-term business outcomes.
  • Lead the transformation agenda for one or more assigned business functions.
  • Partner with business leaders to identify opportunities, define future-state solutions, and translate strategic priorities into sequenced execution plans.
  • Recommend project design, priorities, resources, vendors, and implementation approaches to the Chief Transformation Officer.
  • Define project scope, milestones, responsibilities, dependencies, success measures, and governance.
  • Lead internal stakeholders, external vendors, and contracted teams while maintaining accountability for delivery.
  • Design and implement AI-enabled processes, automations, and operating models in partnership with internal and external teams.
  • Develop financial models, business cases, data analyses, and performance measures to guide decisions and evaluate results.
  • Identify risks, organizational impacts, and delivery barriers early, working across functions to resolve them.
  • Prepare clear progress updates and recommendations for the Chief Transformation Officer, CEO, and senior leadership.

For this position, we're open to remote candidates based in Canada, provided you have full working rights for the region.

The average base salary pay range for this position is $100,000 - $140,000 CAD
