What is a remote computer aided drug design?

A Remote Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) job involves using computational tools and software to design, analyze, and optimize potential drug molecules from a remote location. Professionals in this role apply principles of chemistry, biology, and computer science to model molecular interactions and predict the efficacy of new compounds. This work is often part of early-stage drug discovery in pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies and allows scientists to collaborate virtually with teams around the world. Remote CADD jobs require strong technical skills in molecular modeling, structural biology, and data analysis, as well as effective communication for virtual teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer aided drug design professional?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Aided Drug Design professional, you need a strong background in computational chemistry, molecular modeling, and drug discovery, typically supported by a degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Proficiency in software tools such as Schrodinger, MOE, AutoDock, and knowledge of programming languages like Python are commonly required. Strong problem-solving ability, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset are vital soft skills for remote teamwork and project advancement. These technical and interpersonal skills are essential for accelerating drug discovery while ensuring seamless collaboration in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote computer aided drug design roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) roles is effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, as projects often require input from chemists, biologists, and data scientists. To address this, professionals should leverage collaborative software platforms and schedule regular virtual meetings to ensure alignment and rapid feedback. Additionally, managing secure access to sensitive data and high-performance computing resources can require proactive coordination with IT departments. Staying organized and maintaining detailed documentation are also crucial to keep projects on track while working remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Computer Aided Drug Design vs Remote Medicinal Chemist?

AspectRemote Computer Aided Drug DesignRemote Medicinal Chemist
Required CredentialsDegree in Chemistry, Bioinformatics, or related field; knowledge of molecular modeling softwareDegree in Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences; experience in chemical synthesis and drug development
Work EnvironmentPrimarily computer-based, collaborative with research teamsLaboratory and office settings, with some remote data analysis
Industry UsagePharmaceutical and biotech companies, research institutionsPharmaceutical companies, research labs, biotech firms

Remote Computer Aided Drug Design focuses on using computational tools to identify and optimize drug candidates, often working remotely with data and modeling software. In contrast, Remote Medicinal Chemists combine computational work with laboratory synthesis and testing, typically requiring lab access. Both roles are vital in drug development but differ in their hands-on versus software-based approaches.

Atwell is seeking a Gas Distribution Designer to support gas distribution projects in and around Green Bay, Wisconsin. This role will focus on preparing design drawings and project deliverables for natural gas distribution projects with an emphasis on safety, accuracy, quality, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.

This position will be located in Green Bay, WI and will require the ability to work in the office on a hybrid schedule, with remote flexibility on other days. The ideal candidate will have experience using CAD software to support utility or gas distribution design projects. While familiarity with CADWorx is a plus, this specific role will primarily support a client that uses an internal design program called DDS. Candidates should have strong CAD experience and be comfortable learning client-specific design platforms.

We are open to a range of experience levels. Ideally, this person will bring 3–5+ years of gas distribution, utility design, or related drafting/design experience, but entry-level candidates with strong CAD skills and an interest in gas distribution design will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare design drawings and construction-related documents for natural gas distribution projects.
  • Interpret sketches, redlines, specification outlines, utility records, field notes, and client standards to develop accurate design deliverables.
  • Create design drawings using CAD software and client-specific design platforms, including the client's internal DDS system.
  • Support gas main replacement, new service installations, relocations, upgrades, and other distribution-related projects.
  • Perform pre-design and pre-construction site visits to verify existing conditions, gather field information, and support constructability.
  • Review site proposals, surveys, base maps, utility records, and project data to support design development.
  • Develop detailed design drawings from general project information, sketches, and field documentation.
  • Ensure designs adhere to applicable codes, standards, client requirements, project-specific procedures, and safety expectations.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, utility representatives, construction teams, and internal design staff.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, permitting support, construction estimates, and project documentation as needed.
  • Maintain and manage CAD files, templates, design models, and project records.
  • Employee may be required to perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience in gas distribution, utility design, civil design, or related drafting/design work preferred.
  • Strong experience using Computer-Aided Design software, such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Map 3D, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar design tools.
  • Familiarity with CADWorx is a plus, but not required for this specific role.
  • Experience with client-specific utility design platforms or the ability to quickly learn new design software.
  • Ability to perform field visits, gather site information, and translate field conditions into accurate design documents.
  • Understanding of utility design standards, construction drawings, and project documentation.
  • Ability to work on a hybrid schedule in Green Bay, WI.

Preferred Experience

  • 3–5+ years of experience in gas distribution, utility design, or related drafting/design work preferred.
  • Entry-level candidates with strong CAD skills and an interest in utility or gas distribution design will also be considered.
  • Experience supporting natural gas utility clients.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution systems, mains, services, valves, tie-ins, utility records, and construction documentation.
  • Experience performing pre-design site walks, field verification, and pre-construction coordination.
  • Familiarity with Wisconsin utility work or Midwest gas distribution projects is a plus.

**This position will be remote. Candidate must be in the Wisconsin market. Ideal areas include Green Bay, Wausau, Milwaukee, and Madison for client-facing travel.**
