What is a remote component engineer?

A Remote Component Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, selecting, and managing electronic or mechanical components for products or systems, while working remotely. Their responsibilities often include evaluating component quality, ensuring compatibility, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to support product development. Remote Component Engineers utilize digital tools and communication platforms to perform their duties from a location outside of the traditional office. This role is common in industries such as electronics, manufacturing, and technology, where global collaboration is essential. The position requires strong technical knowledge, analytical skills, and the ability to work independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote component engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Component Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, component selection, and circuit design, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD tools like Altium Designer or OrCAD, familiarity with ERP systems, and knowledge of industry standards are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure reliable component choices, efficient collaboration with global teams, and successful project outcomes in distributed engineering environments.

How does a remote component engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure component integration and quality?

As a Remote Component Engineer, you will frequently work with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to ensure that electronic or mechanical components meet project requirements. Collaboration often involves virtual meetings, sharing detailed specifications, and reviewing test results to address integration issues. You'll use digital collaboration tools to communicate updates, resolve technical challenges, and coordinate on design changes, making strong remote communication skills essential. This collaborative workflow ensures components are delivered on time and meet the necessary standards for performance and reliability.

Job description

About the Role

This is a founding-level engineering role at a seed-stage, YC-backed insurtech startup building AI agents that automate complex claims operations for insurance carriers and TPAs. You'll take true end-to-end ownership of the core platform — from eval pipelines and model reliability to document parsing and agent execution infrastructure — on a small, high-velocity team where your architectural decisions shape the product directly.

What You'll Do
  • Own entire platform components end-to-end, including evaluation pipelines, model reliability, document parsing, and agent execution infrastructure.

  • Build and maintain reliability systems: retries, circuit breakers, failover, observability, and canary deployments.

  • Design and ship an eval platform that catches regressions before customers encounter them, including per-run evals and automated regression detection.

  • Collaborate closely with forward-deployed engineers to rapidly spec, build, and ship solutions driven by real customer pain points.

  • Shape developer platform tooling, CI/CD workflows, and coding agent integrations to increase team velocity.

What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years owning a core platform component end-to-end at a VC-backed startup with measurable business outcomes.

  • TypeScript and SQL as primary production languages — must be clearly evidenced on resume or public profile.

  • Hands-on AWS experience in a production environment; familiarity with GCP is a plus.

  • Proven backend expertise: REST APIs, PostgreSQL, vector databases, Docker, and system architecture.

  • Experience in a regulated or security-sensitive domain (insurtech, fintech, or healthtech) where auditability and traceability were hard requirements.

  • A public engineering artifact (GitHub repository, personal technical site, or published technical content) demonstrating genuine interest beyond day-to-day employment.

  • Technical degree (Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent).

  • Nice to have: experience shipping AI/LLM agent infrastructure (tool orchestration, eval pipelines, session lifecycle); background in voice AI, insurance platforms, or fintech; product engineering or PM experience; early-stage startup or founding experience.

  • US work authorization required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $165,000 – $270,000 USD annually

  • Equity participation expected at founding-engineer level

  • Visa sponsorship: not available

Location

On-site in Los Angeles, CA (also open to New York, NY or San Francisco, CA). Remote work is not available for this role.
