To thrive as a Remote Compliance Tester, you need a solid understanding of regulatory standards, risk assessment, and auditing principles, often supported by a degree in a related field and relevant certifications like CISA or CRCM. Familiarity with compliance management software, remote collaboration tools, and data analysis systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective written communication are essential soft skills for accurately assessing compliance and reporting findings. These skills ensure that organizations adhere to regulations, minimize risk, and maintain trust with stakeholders while operating remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote compliance testing roles, and how can they be managed?

Remote compliance testing professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple time zones, maintaining clear communication with dispersed teams, and ensuring access to secure systems for testing sensitive data. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish structured communication channels, use collaborative project management tools, and follow strict cybersecurity protocols. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help ensure everyone stays aligned and compliance standards are met efficiently.

What is remote compliance testing?

Remote compliance testing is a process where compliance assessments and tests are conducted virtually, rather than onsite, to ensure that an organization meets regulatory standards and industry requirements. This typically involves using digital tools to review documents, interview staff, and assess processes from a distance. Remote compliance testing is widely used in industries such as finance, healthcare, and information technology to maintain compliance while reducing travel and operational costs. It enables organizations to stay up-to-date with regulations even when physical access to facilities is limited. The approach is efficient, scalable, and often faster than traditional onsite audits.

Job description

On-Call Project Archaeologist (Remote)

Southeast Region (GA, SC, TN or vicinity)

About On-Call Employment with ICF

Given the seasonal or project-specific nature of our environmental work, ICF often hires environmental professionals as "On-Call" employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work hours as they become available (we usually schedule work hours a few weeks ahead of time), and each on-call employee is free to accept or refuse the hours assigned to them in a given week. On-Call employees may work concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignment (as long as their outside work does not create a conflict of interest with the work they do for ICF).

ICF is currently seeking an On-Call Project Archaeologist to support the growth of our cultural resources practice in the Eastern U.S., especially on energy, transportation, and federal sector projects in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Applicants living throughout that region are encouraged to apply.

Job Description

As a Project Archaeologist at ICF, you will lead and/or contribute to archaeology and cultural resources studies as either stand-alone projects or as part of larger multi-disciplinary projects. Technical duties will include conducting background research, field survey, laboratory analysis, and eligibility evaluation and documenting the results in technical reports suitable for agency and SHPO consultation. You will also combine your archaeology technical skills with regulatory compliance expertise to support project-level analysis and programmatic solutions for NEPA and Section 106 compliance (and state compliance, as applicable). The Project Archaeologist will work closely with our Senior Archaeologists and Historic Preservation Specialists on project work, with opportunities to direct and mentor early career team members.

What You Will Do

  • Conduct archaeological surveys, testing, and data recovery for projects primarily in the Southeastern US and Mid-Atlantic. Duties will include field supervision of on-call staff conducting excavation of close interval shovel tests and formal excavation units.
  • Provide analysis/writing for environmental regulatory reviews under NEPA, NHPA, and state requirements.
  • Contribute to technical expertise in archaeology, including technical approach development, analysis and documentation, and collaboration with junior and senior technical colleagues.
  • Write and produce technical reports or documents.
  • Evaluate resources for the National Register of Historic Places. Develop resource management recommendations and assess project effects on resources.
  • Collaborate with architectural and landscape historians toward an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to cultural resources management.
  • Collaborate in an integrated team with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders.

What You Must Have (Minimum quals)

  • Master's degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or related field.
  • 3+ years of professional, related experience.
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior's Qualification Standards for Archaeology

What We'd Like You To Have (Preferred quals)

  • Demonstrated capability to serve as Field Director on archaeological field studies.
  • Be able to conduct field work in remote locations and be comfortable in the field environment
  • Knowledgeable in Southeast archaeology; familiarity with other regions of the U.S. is a plus
  • Command of NEPA, NHPA, and other state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and experienced with variety of GPS equipment
  • Specialization in historic archaeology, geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, lithic analysis, or bioarchaeology.
  • Meaningful experience conducting or supporting consultation with Tribal representatives.
  • Participation in project budget development, project schedules, production of deliverables, and QA/QC process tracking.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist

Professional skills you will use:

  • Demonstrated capability to adhere to project budgets, schedules, and deliverables
  • Problem-solving ability, creativity, analytical skills.
  • Orientation toward fulfilling client objectives.
