What does a remote compiler engineer do?

A Remote Compiler Engineer designs, develops, and maintains compilers, which are programs that translate source code written in one programming language into another language, often machine code. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams using online tools to improve compiler performance, add new features, and fix bugs. Their role may also involve optimizing code generation, supporting new hardware architectures, and ensuring compatibility with various programming languages. Remote Compiler Engineers typically have strong programming skills, especially in languages like C, C++, or Rust, and a deep understanding of computer architecture.

What are some common challenges remote compiler engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Compiler Engineers often work with globally distributed teams, which can lead to challenges such as coordinating across time zones, ensuring clear communication on complex technical issues, and maintaining code consistency. Effective use of collaboration tools, thorough documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to overcoming these hurdles. Additionally, sharing knowledge proactively and participating in code reviews help maintain alignment and foster a strong team dynamic, even when working remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote compiler engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Compiler Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, expertise in compiler theory, and proficiency in programming languages such as C++ or Rust. Experience with build systems, version control (e.g., Git), and familiarity with tools like LLVM or GCC is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams. These competencies ensure robust, efficient compiler development and effective teamwork in a remote environment.

Job description

Job Title: Staff Configuration Platform Engineer
Location: Remote (US) - 9-5 EST
Duration: 6+ months plus extension or conversion
Job Description:
The hands-on builder spanning three areas: the configuration compiler and its shared library of reusable workflow building blocks, direct authoring of client program workflows, and vendor/external-system integrations (specialty pharmacy, copay support, data aggregators).
Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and extend the YAML-based configuration compiler (TypeScript) that turns program/workflow configuration into the platform's JSON and database artifacts.
  • Curate the shared library of reusable workflow building blocks - promote duplicated, client-specific logic into shared definitions instead of letting every program reinvent it.
  • Author and maintain client program workflows directly in configuration source - phases, workflow steps, task forms - for new and existing client onboarding.
  • Build and maintain vendor/external-system integrations (specialty pharmacy, copay, data aggregators) in C#/.NET, using the platform's established integration pattern.
  • Diagnose and fix issues across the full pipeline, from configuration source through compiled output to runtime behavior in the production application.
  • Contribute to stabilizing the team's no-code configuration UI as capacity allows.
  • Partner with the QA/Test Automation Engineer to make configuration source and compiled output testable - exposing the right hooks and fixtures rather than treating test automation as a bolt-on.

Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience leading and mentoring other Engineers in best practices.
  • Strong TypeScript/Node engineering experience, ideally including compiler, code-generation, or DSL work.
  • Working proficiency in C#/.NET (ASP.NET Core, EF Core) - this role bridges both stacks.
  • Comfortable working directly in YAML/JSON configuration with real production consequences.
  • Experience integrating with external/third-party APIs in a regulated or enterprise context.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and context-switching - Staff-level scope compressed into a single individual contributor.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing monolithic applications.
  • Experience developing configurable workflows with reusable components that are highly complex.
  • Target industries: Healthcare, Healthcare Insurance.

Soft Skills:
  • People who are proud of the work they do.
  • Individuals who love solving problems.
  • Consulting backgrounds are great.
  • High IQ.
  • Curious and inquisitive.
  • People who have side passion projects related to the field.
  • People with an AI FIRST mindset.
  • People who have a systems mindset.
  • "10x Software/Platform Engineers" - folks that are highly productive because they automate where they can and use AI to solve problems faster.
