Remote Competitive Programming information

What are some common challenges faced by remote competitive programmers, and how can they overcome them?

Remote competitive programmers often face challenges such as maintaining motivation without in-person peer interaction, managing time effectively across different problem sets, and staying updated with the latest algorithms. To overcome these hurdles, it's helpful to join online programming communities, participate in virtual contests, and set a consistent practice schedule. Regular collaboration with peers through online forums or coding groups can also foster a sense of camaraderie and facilitate knowledge sharing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Competitive Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Competitive Programmer, you need advanced skills in algorithms, data structures, problem-solving, and proficiency in programming languages like C++, Java, or Python, often demonstrated by strong performance in online coding platforms. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), online judges (such as Codeforces or LeetCode), and sometimes participation in recognized contests or certifications is typical. Exceptional analytical thinking, time management, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for efficiently solving complex problems, maintaining code quality, and succeeding in highly competitive remote environments.

What is remote competitive programming?

Remote competitive programming involves participating in programming contests and challenges through online platforms, rather than attending in-person events. Competitors solve algorithmic and coding problems within a limited time frame, often individually or in teams, and submit their solutions remotely. This allows programmers from around the world to compete, improve their problem-solving skills, and gain recognition. Many major competitions, like Codeforces, LeetCode, and AtCoder, are conducted entirely online, making this field accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

What is the difference between Remote Competitive Programming vs Remote Software Developer?

Industry UsageHobby, skill-building, coding competitionsProduct development, tech companies, startups
Search & Comparison IntentSkills, practice, competitionsJob opportunities, remote work options

Remote Competitive Programming involves solo participation in online coding contests to improve problem-solving skills, often without formal credentials. In contrast, Remote Software Developers work on building software solutions within teams, usually requiring relevant degrees and collaborative tools. While both roles involve coding, their environments and industry applications differ significantly.

Job description

We are looking for an Automation Engineer to sit within our Exchange Operations (ExOps) team and own the technical infrastructure that powers our prediction market lifecycle. This is a builder's role: you will identify manual workflows, design automated solutions, and ship tools that make our operations faster, more accurate, and more resilient.

You understand prediction market mechanics and have a strong enough domain sense to know what needs to be automated and why-not just how. You will work closely with the broader ExOps team to translate operational pain points into robust pipelines and tooling.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain automated pipelines for market creation, monitoring, settlement, and dispute resolution using Python and Airflow.
  • Integrate sports data feeds (e.g., Sportradar, Genius Sports), government data APIs (BLS, Fed, ECB), and political event sources to power automated settlement workflows.
  • Build and maintain REST API integrations with internal exchange systems and third-party data providers.
  • Develop AI-assisted tooling for outcome verification, edge case detection, and settlement rule drafting-leveraging LLM APIs and prompt engineering where appropriate.
  • Manage cron jobs and scheduled tasks; monitor pipeline health and respond to failures in production.
  • Instrument observability: logging, alerting, and audit trails that meet CFTC regulatory standards.
  • Partner with ExOps team members to identify manual processes and systematically eliminate them.
  • Contribute to internal tooling documentation and code review practices.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical operations, data engineering, or backend engineering role.
  • Strong Python proficiency: data processing, API clients, scripting, and automation.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining REST API integrations.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow or similar (Prefect, Dagster).
  • Familiarity with sports data feeds or event-driven data pipelines.
  • Comfort working in Linux environments, including shell scripting and cron job management.
  • Solid understanding of prediction market mechanics (binary options, categorical markets) or derivatives products.
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-moving environment with live production stakes.
Preferred Background
  • Experience at a sportsbook, DFS platform, sports data company, or CFTC-regulated exchange.
  • Hands-on experience with AI tooling-LLM API integration, prompt engineering, or building AI-assisted decision workflows.
  • Familiarity with sports data providers such as Sportradar or Genius Sports.
  • Knowledge of CFTC regulatory requirements or market surveillance practices.
  • Experience with FIX protocol or financial exchange infrastructure.
  • Background in political forecasting data, macroeconomic data sources (BLS, Fed, ECB), or event-driven settlement systems.
Schedule & Logistics

This role supports live global events and may require occasional rotational coverage including evenings, weekends, or holidays, with weekday off-days provided. This is a remote role.

$100,000 - $130,000 a year
