Work EnvironmentOnline, flexible, e-commerce platformsOnline, diverse industries, various topics
Employer & Industry UsageRetail, online marketplaces, brandsMedia, marketing agencies, blogs
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding e-commerce content rolesGeneral content creation roles

The main difference is that Remote Commerce Writers focus on creating product descriptions, category pages, and e-commerce content, requiring knowledge of online retail and SEO. Remote Content Writers produce a broader range of content across industries, often with less emphasis on e-commerce specifics. Both roles involve remote work and require strong writing skills, but their industry focus and content types differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote commerce writer?

To thrive as a Remote Commerce Writer, you need strong writing skills, a keen understanding of SEO, and familiarity with digital content strategies, often supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Proficiency in content management systems (like WordPress), affiliate marketing platforms, and analytics tools is typically required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you meet deadlines and collaborate remotely with editors and teams. These abilities ensure that commerce content is engaging, optimized for search, and drives revenue while maintaining editorial standards.

What is a remote commerce writer?

A Remote Commerce Writer is a professional who creates content designed to inform and influence readers about products and services, typically for digital publications or e-commerce platforms. Working remotely, they research products, write reviews, buying guides, and promotional articles that help drive online sales and affiliate revenue. Their work often involves SEO optimization, collaborating with editors and marketing teams, and staying updated on the latest trends in e-commerce. This role requires strong writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently from any location.

How does a remote commerce writer typically collaborate with editors and other team members when working from different locations?

As a Remote Commerce Writer, you'll regularly collaborate with editors, SEO specialists, and sometimes product or affiliate teams through digital communication tools like Slack, email, and project management platforms. Editors usually provide assignments, feedback, and deadlines, while team meetings (often held via video calls) help ensure alignment on content strategy and priorities. Clear, proactive communication is essential, as is the ability to adapt to asynchronous workflows and shared documents. This collaborative, digital-first environment allows for flexibility but requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills to maintain productivity and meet goals.

Job description

Who we are:

Illumia is an industry leader in bringing the best integrated technology solutions to education, healthcare, and business campuses worldwide. Illumia was built on the collective expertise of two legacy cultures, and brings together people, technology, and insight to pioneer the art of the experience across the communities we serve. Be a part of this exciting organization and improving the lives of people doing mission-critical work.

Why join our team?

We strive to provide the best customer experience in the industry and have succeeded with a single, strong motivating principle: We serve our user community.

Our success and growth are directly attributed to our people. Our newly named company is dedicated to fostering a culture of integrity, respect, and continuous personal development. We maintain an entrepreneurial spirit, where creativity, innovative problem-solving, and learning agility drive our day-to-day actions.

What you will be doing:

As an Implementation Consultant, you deploy Illumia's Cloud POS, Mobile Ordering, and related commerce solutions for higher education and campus clients. You independently manage short-term technical project engagements from configuration through installation, training, and launch - delivering onsite and remote services that help each client get optimal value from their Illumia technology.

Job Summary / Purpose

  • The Implementation Consultant deploys Illumia's Cloud POS, Mobile Ordering, and related commerce solutions for campus clients. The role independently manages short-term technical project engagements end to end - configuration, installation, training, and launch support - to meet department goals for completion dates, deployment throughput, and customer satisfaction.

Who you will work with:

You will work closely with Illumia's implementation and deployment team, project managers, and client stakeholders at higher education and campus sites. This is an individual-contributor role with no direct reports, partnering regularly with internal support, product, and services teams as well as third-party payment and hardware vendors.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Deploy Illumia's Cloud POS solution.
  • Deploy Illumia's Mobile Ordering solution.
  • Deploy additional Illumia solutions as training and demand allow.
  • Develop familiarity with and deploy third-party payment solutions.
  • Understand third-party hardware, such as HP and NCR equipment.
  • Independently manage and provide service on short-term technical project engagements.
  • Meet established department goals related to target completion dates, customer satisfaction, deployment throughput, and more as assigned.
  • Deliver onsite and remote installation duties as assigned.
  • Support launch events for clients remotely and onsite as assigned.
  • Deliver expert training and consultative services to provide optimal system functionality.

What You'll Bring:

Required Qualifications

  • Degree or certificate in a technical or IT concentration, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to learn and master new software solutions.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft products, including but not limited to Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent oral and written communication.
  • Detail-oriented and proactive mindset.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain deployment priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Higher Education environment.
  • Experience working in dining service management.
  • Experience working with Illumia (formerly Transact Campus) solutions.
  • Experience in a client technical support or service role.
  • Experience deploying or supporting Point of Sale and eCommerce solutions.

Essential Functions of the job:

The duties and responsibilities described in this job description are intended to represent the essential functions of the position as defined under applicable federal, state, and local labor laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These functions are the fundamental job duties required for successful performance.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions unless such accommodations impose an undue hardship on the organization.

This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities. Duties may be added, removed, or modified at any time in accordance with business needs and applicable law.

What is good to know:

Travel: Up to 10% travel domestically and within Canada.

Competencies and Behaviors

  • Humble: The right leaders for Illumia don't need to own the spotlight - they share credit, define success collectively, and are quick to elevate the contributions of others. This is a company that still writes its story. The leaders who thrive here find energy in building something together, not in being recognized as the smartest person in the room.
  • Hungry: We are not looking for caretakers. We are looking for leaders who are restless about what's possible, self-motivated to close the gap between where we are today and where we need to be, and who are already thinking about the next opportunity before anyone asks.
  • Smart: At Illumia, our leaders must operate across a complex, distributed organization spanning multiple product lines, two legacy cultures, and thousands of customers with competing priorities. Technical skills matter, but the ability to read a room, build trust across functions, and bring people along is what separates a great leader from one who burns the organization out.

This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and applicable state wage-and-hour laws.

What you get when you join our team:

  • Flexible time off to include paid holidays and volunteer time.
  • Robust health, dental, and vision insurance plans on your first day of employment
  • Comprehensive employee assistance program (EAP)
  • Employer-paid life insurance/AD&D/short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA)
  • Matched 401(k)
  • Employee stock purchase plan

Base salary offers for this position may vary based on factors such as location, skills, and relevant experience. Some positions may include additional compensation in the form of bonus, equity, or commissions.

Your personal information will be handled in accordance with Illumia's Candidate Privacy Notice

Illumia is an equal employment opportunity employer and considers qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, gender, age, religion, national origin, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, protected military/veteran status, or any other protected factor.
