What is a remote combo rig welder?

Remote combo rig welders are skilled tradespeople who operate welding rigs in remote locations, often on industrial sites such as oilfields, pipelines, or construction projects. 'Combo' refers to their ability to perform both structural and pipe welding, using various methods like SMAW (stick), TIG, or MIG welding. These welders usually travel to job sites with their own equipment and are responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of welds under challenging conditions. Their work is essential for building and maintaining critical infrastructure, especially in areas that are difficult to access.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a remote combo rig welder?

To excel as a Remote Combo Rig Welder, you need expertise in various welding techniques (such as SMAW, MIG, TIG), blueprint reading, and a valid welding certification like AWS or equivalent. Familiarity with welding equipment, rigging gear, safety protocols, and sometimes experience with welding inspection systems is expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially when working independently in remote locations. These skills ensure high-quality, safe welds and reliable performance in challenging and often isolated work environments.

What challenges do remote combo rig welders face and how can they be addressed?

Remote combo rig welders often encounter challenges such as working in isolated locations, adapting to varying weather conditions, and managing limited on-site resources. Effective communication with supervisors and team members is crucial, especially when troubleshooting or coordinating repairs from a distance. Staying organized, planning ahead for potential equipment needs, and maintaining strict safety protocols can help mitigate these challenges and ensure high-quality work even in remote environments.

Job description

SUMMARY

Our client is seeking a driven, technically credible National Sales Representative to build and lead the national growth of their Foundation Drilling Tooling product line. This is a greenfield role: you will develop new business from the ground up, deepen existing customer relationships, and establish our client as a go-to supplier for foundation drilling contractors across the United States.
Our client manufactures high-quality foundation tooling (rock and dirt augers, core barrels, drilling and cleanout buckets, ACIP/CFA auger sections, drive heads, flighting, and wear parts) backed by competitive lead times and in-house manufacturing capability. You will own the foundation tooling effort while representing the broader product portfolio where natural cross-selling opportunities exist.
This role carries genuine product-line influence. As the company's foundation tooling expert and voice of the customer, you'll feed price targets, design requirements, and market intelligence back to engineering and marketing, helping shape the product line, not just sell from a book/catalog. You'll also have a responsive engineering partner who understands sales urgency and will engage directly with customers when needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Business development. Identify, prospect, and close new foundation drilling tooling customers nationally, with a focus on small-to-mid-size foundation drilling contractors (roughly 90% direct-to-contractor, 10% dealer).
  • RFQ & quote management. Respond to inbound RFQs in a configure-to-order business, generating accurate, timely quotes (target 24-48 hour turnaround) and managing orders through production in coordination with operations.
  • Account growth. Expand relationships with existing customers, increasing wallet share through foundation tooling, wear parts, and complementary products.
  • Wear-parts & consumables. Grow the recurring wear-parts business (teeth, wear components) as part of a one-stop-shop support relationship.
  • Technical consultation. Understand contractors' rig configurations, ground conditions, and project requirements. Recommends tooling solutions; bring in engineering support when it advances the sale.
  • Voice of the customer. Feed market intelligence, pricing input, and design/standardization requirements to engineering and marketing to refine the company's foundation tooling offering.
  • Trade shows & industry events. Represent our client at key events including DFI, ADSC, and select regional foundation drilling conferences to build visibility and generate leads.
  • Jobsite presence. Conduct jobsite visits to build relationships, assess tooling performance, and identify additional needs.
  • Market intelligence. Monitor competitor activity, track industry trends, and target displaced or underserved customers.
  • Sales reporting. Maintain accurate CRM records, provide pipeline updates, and contribute to forecasting and territory planning.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 5 years of outside sales experience in foundation drilling, deep foundations, or closely related heavy civil construction — selling tooling, wear parts, or drill-rig equipment.
  • Established network of relationships with foundation drilling contractors, project managers, and equipment decision-makers.
  • Strong technical understanding of drilled shaft construction methods, rig types (e.g., Bauer, Soilmec, Casagrande, Watson, Bay Shore), and foundation tooling applications. Must be able to hold a credible conversation with a foundation drilling contractor, project manager, or rig operator.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate customer requirements into tooling specifications, rather than selling off a catalog.
  • Proven track record of opening new accounts and meeting or exceeding targets in a territory-based or national sales role.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and tooling specifications.
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment with approximately 50% travel, including overnight travel.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills; proficiency with CRM systems and standard business software.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Direct experience selling foundation drilling tooling (augers, buckets, core barrels, kelly bars, casing) at a tooling manufacturer.
  • Experience with ACIP/CFA piling methods and tooling, drilled shaft, or micro-pile applications.
  • Familiarity with foundation tooling manufacturing processes (welding, fabrication, hard facing, flighting).
  • Existing relationships with small-to-mid-size foundation drilling contractors.
  • Active involvement with industry associations such as DFI or ADSC.
  • Experience in a growth-stage or start-up territory where building from the ground up was required.
  • Familiarity with helical pile systems as adjacent product knowledge (not the focus of this role).
