What is a remote coder?

A Remote Coder is a professional who writes and maintains computer code for software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or any place with internet connectivity. Remote Coders collaborate with teams using online tools and are responsible for tasks such as debugging, code reviews, and implementing features. This role offers flexibility and may require strong communication skills and self-motivation to meet project deadlines. Remote Coders can work in various industries, including technology, healthcare, and finance.

What does a remote coder do?

Remote medical coders handle patient information to ensure their medical services are billed properly to their insurance company. This administrative position is sometimes referred to as medical records technicians or health information technicians. Unlike coders who work in the office, remote medical coders work from home or another location outside of the office. Remote medical coders collect, research, and file patient medical information. As a remote medical coder, your primary responsibilities include making sure that all the data in a patient’s record is accurate and up-to-date, organizing patient data within multiple databases, and using medical codes to determine reimbursement for insurance billing purposes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Coder, you need in-depth knowledge of medical coding systems, anatomy, and healthcare regulations, typically supported by a certification such as CPC, CCS, or CCA. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) software, coding tools like ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and online coding platforms is essential. Strong attention to detail, time management, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for accuracy and productivity in a remote setting. These skills ensure precise coding, compliance with healthcare standards, and reliable performance while working independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote coders and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote coders often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with team members across time zones, managing distractions in a home environment, and staying motivated without in-person supervision. To address these, it's important to utilize collaboration tools (like Slack or Zoom), set up a dedicated workspace, and establish a structured daily routine. Regular check-ins with your team and proactive communication can also help ensure alignment on project goals and deadlines.

What is the difference between Remote Coder vs Medical Biller?

Job FocusAssigning codes for diagnoses and proceduresProcessing insurance claims and payments

Remote Coders primarily focus on reviewing medical records and assigning appropriate codes for billing and documentation, while Medical Billers handle submitting claims and following up on payments. Both roles often require similar certifications and can be performed remotely, but their core responsibilities differ within the healthcare revenue cycle.

Can you work remotely as a remote coder?

Remote coders can work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection, as many coding jobs are fully remote. These roles often require proficiency in programming languages, collaboration tools, and sometimes specific certifications, but location is generally flexible. Employers may have different policies, so it's important to confirm remote work options for each position.

How much do remote coders make from home?

Remote coders typically earn between $40,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and specialization. Skilled coders with certifications like CPC or CCS and proficiency in coding software can earn higher salaries, especially with several years of experience working independently or for healthcare organizations.

Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer

Transform9

Birmingham, AL • Remote

$54 - $74/hr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 21 days ago

Job description

Calling your doctor shouldn't be harder than seeing your doctor. But at most practices, patients wait on hold, front-office staff drown in ring queues, and revenue walks out the door with every missed call.

Transform9 builds AI agents that answer every call for physician practices — scheduling appointments, routing callers, and resolving routine requests in seconds, around the clock. Our agents integrate directly with each practice's EHR, practice management, and phone systems, and adapt to how their front office actually works.

Our agents have handled millions of patient calls for thousands of providers, cut average hold times by 90%, and decreased call abandonment by 80%. We're headquartered in Birmingham, AL, and growing fast.

About the role

Transform9's platform handles real patient calls around the clock. The infrastructure has to be reliable, scalable, and secure — there is no acceptable downtime. As our Infrastructure / DevOps Engineer, you'll own the AWS infrastructure that runs the platform, build and maintain the CI/CD pipelines that ship it, and grow into a Site Reliability function as the team scales. This role is for someone who thinks in systems, automates everything, and takes platform reliability personally.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and manage AWS infrastructure for a real-time, high-availability voice AI platform
  • Own CI/CD pipelines — build, test, deploy, and rollback automation across all environments
  • Define and implement infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, CDK, or equivalent
  • Monitor platform health, define SLOs/SLAs, and build alerting and observability tooling
  • Respond to and lead resolution of infrastructure-level incidents; drive post-mortems
  • Harden infrastructure for HIPAA compliance — encryption, access controls, audit logging, and network security
  • Partner with engineering teams to optimize system performance, cost, and scalability
  • Grow the SRE practice: runbooks, incident response playbooks, chaos engineering, and reliability reviews

Location

Remote (US). If you're in the Birmingham, AL area, this role is hybrid from our office (3 days in office / 2 remote).

Requirements

  • 5+ years in infrastructure, DevOps, or cloud engineering roles
  • Deep hands-on AWS experience (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS/Aurora, S3, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, and related services)
  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform preferred)
  • Strong CI/CD pipeline experience (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent)
  • Solid understanding of networking, security groups, load balancing, and DNS
  • Experience with container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, or ECS)
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (Datadog, Grafana, CloudWatch, or equivalent)
  • Understanding of HIPAA infrastructure requirements (encryption at rest/in transit, audit trails, access controls)

Nice to have

  • Site Reliability Engineering background or formal SRE experience
  • Experience supporting real-time or high-throughput systems (voice, streaming, or similar)
  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or SysOps)
  • Experience with multi-region or active-active deployment architectures
  • Database administration or performance tuning experience

Benefits

  • Top-tier health coverage: medical, dental & vision
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off + holidays, and paid parental leave

If you want to fix the front door of healthcare, we'd love to hear from you.

Transform9 is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

Note: the Transform9 team will only email you from a transform9.com email address.
