Remote Code Review focuses on evaluating and improving code written by developers, requiring knowledge of coding standards and review tools. Remote Software Developers actively create and implement software solutions, requiring programming expertise. Both roles are common in tech industries and often collaborate, but they differ in responsibilities and skill sets.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in remote code review roles, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in remote code review roles is effective communication—conveying feedback clearly and constructively without face-to-face interaction. Additionally, understanding the context of code changes and ensuring consistency with team standards can be harder when working remotely. These challenges can be addressed by establishing clear review guidelines, utilizing collaborative tools like code review platforms, and maintaining regular virtual check-ins with the development team. Building strong documentation and participating in team discussions also help remote code reviewers stay aligned with project goals.

What is a remote code review?

A remote code review is the process of examining and evaluating someone’s code from a different location, often using online tools or platforms. This allows software developers to review code changes, suggest improvements, and detect bugs without being physically present with the author. Remote code reviews help ensure code quality, maintain consistency, and foster collaboration within distributed teams. Tools like GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket are commonly used to facilitate remote code reviews through features like pull requests and inline comments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Code Reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Code Reviewer, you need expert knowledge of programming languages, software development best practices, and extensive experience with code review processes. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and code review tools such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective written communication, and the ability to provide constructive feedback are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure code quality, foster team collaboration, and help maintain reliable and maintainable software in distributed work environments.

Job description

Distinguished Engineer , Bank Tech (Remote- Eligible)

As a Distinguished Engineer at Capital One, you will be a part of a community of technical experts working to define the future of banking in the cloud.

You will work alongside our talented team of developers, machine learning experts, product managers and people leaders. Our Distinguished Engineers are leading experts in their domains, helping devise practical and reusable solutions to complex problems. You will drive innovation at multiple levels, helping optimize business outcomes while driving towards strong technology solutions.

At Capital One, we believe diversity of thought strengthens our ability to influence, collaborate and provide the most innovative solutions across organizational boundaries. You will promote a culture of engineering excellence, and strike the right balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where the ideas of others can be heard and championed. You will lead the way in creating next-generation talent for Capital One Tech, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting to keep building our community.

Distinguished Engineers are expected to lead through technical contribution. You will operate as a trusted advisor for our key technologies, platforms and capability domains, creating clear and concise communications, code samples, blog posts and other material to share knowledge both inside and outside the organization. You will specialize in a particular subject area, but your input and impact will be sought and expected throughout the organization.

In this role, you will work with our Platform Engineering organization to provide AI-enabled tools for pipeline optimization and deterministic transformation capabilities that dramatically improve developer workflow, quality, and reliability.

If you are ready to provide thought leadership and build engineering excellence across Capital One's engineering teams, come join us in our mission to change banking for good.

About the Team:

The Capital One Acquisitions Technology organization owns the customer journey through customer account opening, decisioning, and onboarding for our Retail and Small Business banks.

As a Distinguished Engineer, you will lead the technical strategy for a large group of engineers and will be the lead architect overseeing a critical part of the company's continued growth. You'll help move us toward a more dynamically-driven application flow, championing server-driven UI and backend-for-frontend (BFF) patterns to ensure we can pivot at the speed of the market. You'll ensure we're building resilient, performant, and maintainable applications so we can deliver what our customers expect from us. And you'll guide our continued integration of AI into our entire software development lifecycle.

What you'll do:

  • Architectural Evolution: Drive the transition to a dynamically-driven architecture, utilizing SDUI and BFF patterns to decouple our front-end experiences from backend complexity.

  • Convergence Strategy: Act as the primary technical arbiter for our journey from line of business-specific tech stacks to determine where uniqueness provides value and where it creates technical debt.

  • AI-Augmented SDLC: Lead the charge in identifying and implementing AI-driven efficiencies across our software development lifecycle (SDLC) to accelerate delivery and improve code resilience.

  • Technical Execution: Guide the technical execution of a diverse project portfolio, collaborating with engineers specializing in everything ranging from distributed microservices to web and mobile applications to fraud and decisioning models.

  • Strategic Influence: Work cross-functionally with product and program management disciplines, and stakeholder and partners across Capital One to help optimize business outcomes while driving towards strong technology solutions

  • Promoting Learning: Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and leading system design and code review sessions.

  • Building our Brand: Help elevate the Capital One Distinguished Engineering community and establish yourself as a go-to resource on given technologies and technology-enabled capabilities.

  • Mentoring: Lead the way in creating next-generation talent, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting external talent to bolster the Capital One tech talent pool.

Responsibilities:

  • Build awareness, increase knowledge and drive adoption of modern technologies, sharing consumer and engineering benefits to gain buy-in

  • Strike the right balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where others' ideas can be heard and championed; leverage expertise to grow skills in the broader Capital One team

  • Promote a culture of engineering excellence, using opportunities to reuse and inner source solutions where possible

  • Effectively communicate with and influence key stakeholders across the enterprise, at all levels of the organization

  • Operate as a trusted advisor for a specific technology, platform or capability domain, helping to shape use cases and implementation in an unified manner

  • Lead the way in creating next-generation talent for Tech, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting external talent to bolster Capital One's Tech talent

Capital One is open to hiring a Remote Employee for this opportunity.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • At least 7 years of experience in software engineering

  • At least 7 years of experience designing distributed systems, backend architecture, and API platforms

  • At least 5 years of experience with public cloud technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience developing and architecting solutions on AWS.

  • Relevant professional certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional or Snowflake/Databricks certifications (e.g., Certified SnowPro Advanced Architect).

  • 10+ years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages like Java, Python, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Swift, etc.

  • 8+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment and production support.

  • Experience navigating and modernizing large-scale, non-greenfield environments with multiple languages and frameworks.

  • Deep understanding of BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) and Server-Driven UI architectures at scale.

  • Deep practical knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, chaos engineering, and advanced Observability tooling (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Tracing).
