What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote cloud developer?

To thrive as a Remote Cloud Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or Node.js), experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and often a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-specific services (e.g., AWS Lambda, Azure Functions) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills ensure the effective development, deployment, and maintenance of scalable cloud solutions in distributed work environments.

What does a remote cloud developer do?

A Remote Cloud Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining applications and services that run on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. They work remotely to create scalable, secure, and efficient solutions using cloud technologies, often collaborating with teams through online tools. Their tasks include writing code, integrating APIs, deploying applications, and optimizing cloud resources. This role requires strong programming skills, familiarity with cloud architectures, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in a distributed environment.

How do remote cloud developers collaborate with distributed teams and manage project communication?

Remote Cloud Developers frequently work with geographically dispersed teams, making effective communication and collaboration essential. Most teams rely on tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and project management platforms such as Jira or Trello to coordinate tasks, share updates, and resolve issues. Regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and documentation are important to ensure alignment and maintain code quality. Adapting to asynchronous communication and being proactive about clarifying requirements or roadblocks can help overcome challenges related to time zone differences and remote work dynamics.

What is the difference between Remote Cloud Developer vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectRemote Cloud DeveloperCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires cloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP), programming skills, and development experienceOften requires similar certifications, with a focus on infrastructure, deployment, and system architecture
Work EnvironmentPrimarily focused on software development, coding, and application deployment in cloud environmentsInvolves designing, implementing, and managing cloud infrastructure and services
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, startups, and organizations developing cloud-based applicationsEmployed by cloud service providers, large enterprises, and organizations managing cloud infrastructure
Common Search & Comparison IntentPeople compare these roles to understand development vs infrastructure responsibilities in cloud computing

Remote Cloud Developers focus on coding and deploying cloud applications, while Cloud Engineers handle infrastructure design and management. Both roles require cloud certifications and are integral to cloud-based projects, but they differ in daily tasks and responsibilities.

Principal Software Engineer, Cloud Platform

Echodyne Corp

Kirkland, WA โ€ข Remote

$153K - $205K/yr

Full-time

Job description

ย Echodyne is seeking a Principal Software Engineer, Cloud Platform,ย to join our fast-growing team.ย ย Who You Areย

You are a high-caliber technical leader who specializes in building the cloud-native "connective tissue" for complexย radarย ecosystems. You thrive at the intersection ofย distributed systems and real-time data ingestion, turning the massive output of edge radar systems into structured, actionable intelligence. As aย technical shepherd, you guide the team to build a mission-critical backend that is "edge-aware"-designed to handle the unique telemetry, scale, and security requirements of a fast-growing fleet of radar assets.ย

Required Experienceย
  • Data Ingestion:ย Expert-levelย proficiencyย inย AWS cloud-native servicesย specifically tuned for high-throughput device data (e.g., IoT Core, Kinesis, Timestream, Lambda). You have a provenย track recordย of leading the development of backends that "talk" to specialized hardware at the edge.ย
  • Distributed Systems:ย Deep experience in leading the design of resilient systems that can handle the bursty, high-frequency telemetry unique to radar systems whileย maintainingย low-latency command-and-control loops.ย
  • Security & Privacy:ย Deep understanding of software security, specificallyย authentication (AuthN) and authorization (AuthZ)ย for remote devices, andย data privacyย frameworks to ensure secure transmission and storage of radar data.ย
  • Technical Leadership:ย Proven experience as aย Tech Lead, moving between high-level system guidance and driving the implementation of complex backend services that support physical assets in the field.ย
  • Collaboration:ย A strong understanding of edge constraints. You understand how radar data is serialized and canย leadย the design of cloud schemas that account for intermittent connectivity and bandwidth limitations.ย
  • Results-Oriented Delivery:ย A clear history of driving technical teams to meet commitments and delivering customer-facing products in rapid R&D or aerospace/defense-adjacent environments.ย
What Sets You Apartย
  • The "Edge-Aware" Tech Lead:ย Youย don'tย treat the cloud as an isolated silo; you lead the development of backend services specifically to solve the challenges of remote radar deployment and management.ย
  • Scalability Visionary:ย You lead the building of systems that can handle the data load of a single radar unit as easily as a global fleet of thousands, ensuring the platformย remainsย durable and supportable.ย
  • Security-First Mindset:ย You ensure that encryption and identity management are baked into the ingestion pipeline, ensuring that every radar unit is a secure endpoint.ย
  • Startup Agility:ย You move fast with aย strong bias toward action,ย maintainingย sound engineering judgment even when building "0 1" systems under tight timelines.ย
ย What You Doย
  • Radar Cloud Integration:ย Act as the technical lead for the cloud resources that ingest, process, and visualize data specifically from our edge radar units.ย
  • Cloud Innovation:ย Research and prototype new backend technologies to improve how we manage radarย systems,ย dataย updates, and real-time telemetry at scale.ย
  • Secure the Pipeline:ย Define and lead the implementation of rigorous authentication protocols for device-to-cloud communication, ensuring the platform meets high security and data privacy standards.ย
  • Partner in Tandem:ย Workย closelyย with the Principal Engineer (Edge IoT) to define the contracts and protocols that bridge the gap between on-radar logic and cloud-side resources.ย
  • Technical Mentorship:ย Partner with the Engineering Manager to mentor the team, elevating engineering standards for design clarity and pragmatic practices across the radar-cloud stack.ย

Echodyne's technology is export controlled by the U.S. Government and we must evaluate an applicant's eligibility to handle export-controlled information or obtain required Government authorizations. Therefore, we will ask you as part of the application process to identify whether you are a U.S. Citizen or green card holder, or have asylum/refugee status in the U.S.ย

WHAT WE OFFERThis is an exempt role.
