Job description

The Cancer Registry department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays an essential role in maintaining accurate, comprehensive cancer data that supports patient care, cancer surveillance, regulatory reporting, research, and institutional quality initiatives. The team carefully reviews patient medical records to capture critical information about cancer diagnoses, treatment, and disease characteristics while ensuring data meets applicable regulatory and state requirements.
This Clinical Data Abstracter position offers the opportunity to work with complex oncology information and contribute to the accuracy of cancer data used throughout MD Anderson. The role is ideal for a highly detail-oriented professional who enjoys reviewing medical records, interpreting clinical information, and working independently to ensure information is captured accurately and consistently.
In this role, you will review detailed and complex patient medical records, including handwritten and electronic documentation, to identify and abstract malignant and benign disease information. Key data elements may include cancer site, histology, stage, and other clinical oncology information required to meet regulatory and state reporting requirements.
You will also support case finding activities by identifying cancer cases within Epic and completing minimal data abstraction for research and operational purposes. The ability to navigate medical records, recognize relevant oncology information, and accurately distinguish information that should be captured will be important to success in this role.
A major focus of the position is data quality and accuracy. You will be responsible for maintaining a high level of quality in abstracted information through careful review and attention to detail. Abstracted data may be evaluated through coworker review, user feedback, and other quality mechanisms, making consistency and exacting accuracy essential.
The ideal candidate will be highly detail-oriented, organized, comfortable working with complex medical information, and capable of maintaining accuracy while reviewing large amounts of documentation. Abstracting - Read and comprehend detailed and complex medical information, either handwritten or typed, from patient medical records. Information to abstract meets regulatory agencies and state requirements and includes malignant and/or benign disease information (i.e. cancer site, histology and stage) Responsible for abstracting non-analytical (failed treatment) cases and minimal clinical oncologic data elements.
Case Finding - Identify cancer cases in Epic and do a minimal data abstraction for research and operational purposes.
Abstracting Quality - Maintain high quality of abstracted data as determined by co-worker review, user feedback, and other data-review mechanisms. Demonstrate attention to detail as exacting accuracy of abstracted information is essential.
EDUCATION
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: Associate's Degree or College courses in medical terminology, anatomy or physiology.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required: 2 years Experience in tumor registry, healthcare or related field.
May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
