What is a remote capacity engineer?

A Remote Capacity Engineer is an IT professional responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing the capacity and performance of computer systems and networks from a remote location. Their primary role is to ensure that infrastructure resources—such as servers, storage, and network bandwidth—are sufficient to meet current and future business demands. They use specialized tools to forecast usage trends, plan for scalability, and prevent system bottlenecks. By working remotely, they can support organizations with distributed systems and cloud-based environments without being physically present onsite.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote capacity engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Capacity Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, performance analysis, and capacity planning, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with monitoring tools like Nagios, Prometheus, or Grafana, and experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating remotely and addressing capacity challenges proactively. These skills ensure optimal system performance, cost efficiency, and reliable scalability for distributed environments.

How does a remote capacity engineer typically collaborate with distributed teams to manage and optimize system performance?

As a Remote Capacity Engineer, you'll work closely with cross-functional teams—including DevOps, product managers, and infrastructure engineers—using collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and video conferencing to monitor, analyze, and forecast system resource needs. Regular communication is essential to ensure all stakeholders are aware of current capacities, upcoming demands, and recommendations for scaling. You'll often participate in virtual stand-ups, review system metrics with team members, and coordinate capacity planning efforts across different time zones. This collaborative, remote environment encourages proactive problem-solving and continuous learning.

What is the difference between Remote Capacity Engineer vs Network Engineer?

Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The Remote Capacity Engineer focuses on analyzing and planning the capacity of cloud and IT resources remotely, ensuring optimal performance. Network Engineers design, implement, and maintain network infrastructure, often on-site. While both roles require networking certifications and involve IT infrastructure, the Capacity Engineer emphasizes capacity planning in cloud environments, whereas the Network Engineer concentrates on network setup and maintenance.

Is it possible to work remotely as a remote capacity engineer?

Remote capacity engineers can often work remotely, especially if their role involves analyzing system performance, planning infrastructure, and using collaboration tools. Many companies offer remote positions for this role, provided the candidate has strong technical skills and relevant certifications. However, some organizations may require on-site presence for certain tasks or team collaboration.

Field Application Engineer (FAE) - Strategic SiC Power Platforms - West Coast

Location: Bay Area (CA) Remote
Organization: Wolfspeed - Power Products
Reports To: Matt Armstrong

Position Overview

Wolfspeed is the global leader in Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology, enabling the next generation of high-efficiency power conversion across Automotive, Industrial & Energy, and Data Center & AI infrastructure.

We are seeking a Field Application Engineer (FAE) to serve as the primary technical interface between Wolfspeed and our West Coast customers. This role is critical in driving scalable SiC design wins, ensuring flawless execution from design-in through high-volume production, and coordinating technical alignment across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC.

This position requires deep power electronics expertise, strong global coordination capability, and the ability to influence platform-level decisions in high-growth end markets.

Strategic Focus Areas

  • Automotive (EV traction inverters, OBC, DC/DC, fast charging)
  • Industrial & Energy (renewables, ESS, motor drives, HVDC)
  • Data Centers & AI (high-density power supplies, AI accelerators, server infrastructure)

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the global technical lead for assigned Wesr Coast customers supporting Wolfspeed SiC programs.
  • Coordinate cross-regional FAE, sales, and engineering teams to ensure consistent messaging and execution.
  • Support scalable platform adoption across multiple geographies and manufacturing sites.
  • Drive alignment between customer design teams and Wolfspeed product, quality, and operations teams.

SiC Application & System Expertise

  • Provide system-level guidance on:
    • SiC MOSFET and module implementation
    • Switching optimization and gate drive design
    • Thermal performance and power density optimization
    • EMI mitigation and layout best practices
  • Support automotive-grade qualification and reliability requirements (AEC-Q, PPAP, mission profiles).
  • Influence early architecture decisions to maximize SiC performance advantages.

End-Market Platform Expansion

  • Identify and drive platform-level opportunities across a broad customer base.
  • Promote design reuse and scalable architectures across Automotive, Energy, and AI infrastructure programs.
  • Support AI data center power transitions toward higher efficiency and higher switching frequencies enabled by SiC.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with:
    • Device Engineering
    • Product Marketing
    • Quality & Reliability
    • Operations (including Mohawk Valley production ramp)
    • Supply Chain and Capacity Planning
  • Proactively manage escalations, risk mitigation, and design validation activities.
  • Provide structured feedback into Wolfspeed's product roadmap based on end-market insights.

Customer Engagement & Executive Support

  • Lead technical design reviews, workshops, and failure analysis discussions.
  • Support customer audits and executive technical engagements.
  • Travel internationally as needed to support key customer milestones and strategic programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in power electronics applications, FAE, or system design roles.
  • Strong expertise in:
    • SiC MOSFETs and power modules
    • High-voltage power conversion (400V-1200V+)
    • Thermal and switching performance optimization
  • Experience supporting Automotive, Industrial Power, or Data Center applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate across global regions and influence large EMS organizations.
  • Strong communication skills capable of engaging both engineers and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

  • Automotive qualification processes (AEC-Q, ISO 26262 familiarity).
  • Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing ramp and capacity-constrained environments.
  • Experience with AI data center power supply architectures.
  • Background in reliability analysis, mission profile evaluation, or field failure diagnostics.

Success Profile

The ideal candidate:

  • Thinks at the system and platform level, not just at the device level
  • Understands the strategic importance of 200mm SiC manufacturing scale
  • Balances technical depth with commercial awareness
  • Drives global alignment across time zones and cultures
  • Operates proactively in high-growth, high-visibility programs

Why This Role Matters

This role is instrumental in ensuring Wolfspeed's SiC technology translates into scalable, high-volume, high-reliability solutions across strategic customer base (West Coast) - accelerating the electrification of transportation, the transition to renewable energy, and the evolution of AI-driven infrastructure.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
