Job Description
The UW Medical Center-Montlake - Adult Genetics Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Genetics Counselor 2.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • Full-Time / 40 Hours Per Week
  • Day Shift
  • This position is expected to last from August 2026 through April 2027

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • The individual in this position will compile, evaluate, and document the family history and genetic test results, and provide pre and post-test genetic counseling services to patients and/or families.
  • Under general supervision, assesses and counsels clients with complex genetics problems.
  • Participate in the development of educational programs; Instruct medical staff, students and others regarding program services. Provides general consultation to other health care staff including community physicians and other primary care providers.
  • The Genetic Counselor will compile family histories, reviews medical records, genetic test results, and conduct patient education regarding complex genetic disorders. Refer complex cases to medical geneticist.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide clinical support for hereditary cancer visits scheduled with the physician clinical geneticist.
  • Coordinate ordering specialized genetic tests; support or guide insurance preauthorization; identify additional family members to be tested
  • Assist medical geneticist in determining patient care needs
  • Discuss prognosis and management options with medical geneticist
  • Educate patients regarding their risks/options and test results
  • Provide grief and crisis counseling to individuals and/or families
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team to provide follow-up patient care
  • Coordinate patient services with other health care providers, social services, insurance companies, and other resources based upon evaluation of individual patient needs
  • Coordinate the handling, ordering and shipping of samples for specialized genetic testing in other locations

DESIRED
One or more years of professional genetic counseling experience
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Master's Degree in genetics counseling or a related field from a program accredited by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel OR equivalent education and/or experience
LICENSE REQUIRED
WA state DOH license for Genetic Counselor
Accreditation Requirement: Certification by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel as a Genetics Counselor
