A Remote C++ Software Engineer Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working with C++ software development, while working from a location outside the company's physical office. Interns collaborate with engineering teams to develop, test, and maintain C++ applications, often communicating via online tools. This type of internship helps build programming, problem-solving, and teamwork skills in a real-world environment, all while offering the flexibility of remote work. It's a valuable stepping stone for those pursuing a career in software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote C++ software engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote C++ Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of C++ programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and typically a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and build tools such as CMake is often expected. Strong communication, time management, and self-motivation are important soft skills for working effectively in a remote environment. Within VIP, the Over-The-Air (OTA) Updates team develops the vehicle-side software that allows GM vehicles to receive software updates remotely, improving functionality, performance, security, and the customer experience throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in the development, integration, and delivery of OTA vehicle software solutions. You will help define system requirements, drive software design and implementation, support testing and validation activities, and provide technical leadership across the development lifecycle.

What You'll Do

  • Lead software design activities and drive resolution of software defects and anomalies.
  • Perform complex software and system-level design analysis to ensure robust, high-quality solutions.
  • Support system integration, verification, and bench testing activities.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software and vehicle integration issues.
  • Collaborate closely with Systems Engineering, Validation, Integration, and other cross-functional teams to deliver solutions on time.
  • Balance and refine system requirements while identifying opportunities for process improvements and innovation.
  • Promote software engineering best practices, coding standards, and development processes across the team.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for key software components, applications, or platform functionality.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with source code management tools such as GitHub, Gerrit, or Bitbucket.
  • Experience with automated build and continuous integration tools such as Jenkins.
  • Experience working within Agile development environments (Scrum, SAFe, XP, or similar).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of embedded software engineering experience
  • Experience developing embedded software for automotive or connected systems.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle communication protocols, including CAN and UDS (ISO 14229/J15765).
  • Experience with vehicle diagnostics and network communications.
