What Does a Remote Buyer Do?

Remote buyers, also called remote procurement managers, research supply vendors and purchase products for your employer. These products may be supplies needed to manufacture goods or to run daily operations, or they may be wholesale items that are resold at retail pricing. As a remote buyer, your responsibilities may include monitoring stock to ensure you replenish goods before the company runs out. You also negotiate with vendors to get the best pricing for the products you need and coordinate with the accounting department to pay the different vendors when the bills are due. Because this position works outside of the office, remote buyers utilize procurement software and online platforms to communicate regularly with managers and other departments.

How do Remote Buyers typically collaborate with suppliers and internal teams despite working offsite?

Remote Buyers often use digital communication tools such as email, video conferencing, and procurement platforms to stay connected with suppliers and internal stakeholders. They regularly coordinate with supply chain, finance, and product teams to ensure purchasing decisions align with company goals. Building strong relationships remotely requires proactive communication, clear documentation, and frequent updates to manage expectations and resolve any issues quickly. This collaborative approach helps maintain efficiency and transparency, even when working from different locations.

What does a remote buyer do?

A remote buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing goods or services for a company while working from a remote location. Their duties typically include researching suppliers, negotiating contracts, evaluating product quality, and ensuring timely delivery of purchased items. Remote buyers use digital tools to communicate with vendors, manage purchase orders, and track shipments, making it possible to perform these tasks efficiently from anywhere with an internet connection.

  • Lead commercial negotiations (pricing, lead time, delivery terms, and conditions) to optimize cost, schedule, and quality outcomes
  • Prepare and issue purchase orders and procurement packages in accordance with company policy and applicable legal requirements
  • Maintain supplier qualification documentation and support supplier onboarding and performance evaluation activities
  • Track material lead times, delivery schedules, and logistics to ensure timely availability aligned with project timelines

  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready procurement records (pricing, correspondence, approvals, and compliance documentation)
  • Monitor market conditions and cost drivers to support budgeting, risk mitigation, and cost reduction strategies
  • Partner cross-functionally to resolve invoice discrepancies, backorders, and quality issues quickly and professionally
  • Use systems such as Deltek Vantagepoint and FMIS to enter, track, and report purchasing activity with strong data integrity
  • Exhibit strong communication, organization, and follow-through skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a project environment
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent applicable experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in purchasing/procurement/supply chain supporting construction or industrial projects
  • Prior experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and scopes of work
  • Experience negotiating pricing, delivery, and commercial terms with suppliers and subcontractors
  • Demonstrated experience with procurement practices, supplier management, and documentation controls (purchase orders, RFQs, approvals, audit-ready records)
  • Hands-on experience with ERP/procurement systems and strong Excel/Office skills; comfort working with data to support decisions
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale industrial or commercial construction projects and fast-paced field schedules
  • Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint and/or FMIS (or similar purchasing/ERP platforms)
  • Established background building or managing supplier performance routines (scorecards, KPI reviews, corrective actions)
  • Prior experience with logistics coordination, lead-time risk management, and materials planning approaches in project delivery environments
  • Professional certification such as CPSM, CPM, CSCP, or CPPB (or similar)
