Remote Building Energy Modeling information

What is remote building energy modeling?

Remote building energy modeling is the process of analyzing and simulating a building's energy usage and performance using specialized software, all conducted from an off-site location. Professionals in this field use digital building plans, utility data, and sometimes remote sensing tools to create detailed models that predict energy consumption, identify efficiency opportunities, and support sustainability goals. This approach allows for collaboration across distances and can reduce costs and time compared to traditional, on-site modeling. It is commonly used in both new construction and retrofitting projects to optimize energy systems and comply with regulatory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote building energy modeler?

To thrive as a Remote Building Energy Modeler, you need expertise in building science, energy analysis, and a background in engineering or architecture, often supported by certifications like LEED or BEMP. Proficiency in specialized software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, IES VE, or OpenStudio is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret results and collaborate with remote teams and clients. These skills are critical for producing accurate models, optimizing building performance, and ensuring compliance with energy codes and sustainability goals.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a remote building energy modeler?

Professionals in remote building energy modeling typically spend their days analyzing architectural drawings, inputting data into energy modeling software, and running simulations to forecast building performance. They often collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers via virtual meetings to ensure the accuracy of their models and provide energy efficiency recommendations. Additionally, they prepare detailed reports summarizing findings and may assist with compliance documentation for green building certifications. Adapting to remote workflows and clear digital communication are important aspects of this role.

Job description

ALTANOVA is now actively hiring a Senior Energy Project Engineer for a full-time position in our New York office. Alternatively located in our Paris, France office or remotely (GMT-5) for highly qualified individuals.

About Altanova:
Altanova is a leading multidisciplinary consulting firm focused on energy and sustainable innovation. Our Sustainable Infrastructure Development team (SID) combines engineering rigor and advanced analytics to advise corporate clients and large real estate owners. We evaluate and support the implementation of large-scale distributed energy solutions across complex commercial and industrial portfolios. Our team of engineers and consultants is dedicated to help our clients achieve strong economic performance while transforming their environmental and social impact through practical, data-driven solutions.

Role Overview:

Altanova is seeking an Energy Project Engineer with strong analytical capabilities and project experience to evaluate and support the development of distributed energy resources, and other strategies, to power and decarbonize our clients' infrastructures. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, finance, and strategy, requiring the ability to translate complex technical and market data into clear, actionable decisions. You will serve as a trusted technical advisor to our clients, representing their interests in the evaluation, structuring, and delivery of energy generation and procurement initiatives from early-stage feasibility analysis through project management.

A central component of the role involves analyzing the technical and financial impact of distributed energy resources through grid flexibility revenue stacks and other opportunities. The role requires strong quantitative skills to evaluate technical constraints, model revenue streams, and support data-driven investment decisions.

The ideal candidate combines technical depth with economic insight and brings a practical, solution-oriented engineering mindset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess the technical feasibility of renewable energy and storage projects across commercial and industrial portfolios.
  • Perform economic modeling and revenue analysis for solar, battery storage, EV charging, and grid flexibility solutions, including evaluation of electricity market participation and ancillary services opportunities.
  • Advise clients on project strategy and coordinate with developers, EPCs, utilities, and energy suppliers to structure commercially and technically optimized solutions.
  • Lead project development and act as Owner's Representative during design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, ensuring delivery on scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Collaborate with Altanova's software development team to enhance analytical capabilities within internal software suites.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, or related field (PhD is a plus).
  • 68 years of experience in renewable energy project development, distributed energy resources, feasibility analysis, or related infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of solar PV, battery storage systems, generators, cogeneration, or microgrids.
  • Familiarity with EV charging, electricity markets, grid flexibility, or data centers.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with analytics and data science.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary and an exceptional benefits package.
  • Opportunities for rapid professional growth, recognition, and collaborative development in a diverse and inclusive environment of talented professionals working every day on exciting, meaningful projects.
  • The chance to be part of a team committed to making a positive and lasting impact on the environment and society.

Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
