Remote Building Code Inspector information

What is a Remote Building Code Inspector?

A Remote Building Code Inspector is a professional who evaluates construction projects for compliance with building codes and regulations, but performs inspections virtually rather than in person. Using digital tools such as video calls, photographs, and specialized software, they review construction progress and completed work from a remote location. This approach allows for greater flexibility and efficiency, especially for projects in remote or hard-to-access areas. Remote inspectors typically communicate with onsite personnel to obtain necessary documentation and visuals to ensure all codes and safety standards are met.

What is the difference between Remote Building Code Inspector vs Remote Construction Inspector?

The Remote Building Code Inspector primarily focuses on ensuring building plans and projects comply with local codes through remote review and virtual inspections. In contrast, the Remote Construction Inspector may be involved in overseeing construction projects remotely, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards. Both roles require similar certifications and are used within the building and construction industry, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Building Code Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Building Code Inspector, you need in-depth knowledge of building codes, construction practices, and inspection procedures, typically backed by relevant certifications such as ICC or state licensure. Familiarity with virtual inspection technology, digital reporting tools, and project management software is crucial for remote work. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities set outstanding inspectors apart. These skills and qualities ensure thorough, accurate inspections and compliance, even when working off-site, to maintain safety and regulatory standards.

How does a Remote Building Code Inspector effectively communicate and collaborate with on-site teams and clients?

Remote Building Code Inspectors rely heavily on digital tools to conduct inspections and maintain clear communication with on-site project managers, contractors, and property owners. Typically, they review digital documentation, photos, and live video feeds to assess compliance and provide feedback. Regular virtual meetings and written reports help address questions, clarify findings, and ensure all parties understand the next steps. Building strong relationships and setting clear expectations are key to overcoming the challenges of not being physically present at the inspection site.

Job description

#jobalert | DIRECT HIRE | Certified Building Inspector | Corpus Christi area (Field-Based)

A Texas-based municipal inspection services firm with active contracts across the state is hiring a Certified Building Official to lead inspection operations in the Corpus Christi area. This is a senior, leadership-level role โ€” not a field inspector seat. You'll supervise inspectors, manage a residential inspection program, serve as a technical resource for the company's sales team, and own quality and code compliance for a live city contract. If you hold your CBO credential and TSBPE license and want leadership scope, real compensation, and a firm that's growing rather than treading water, this is worth a conversation.

  • $90Kโ€“$120K annually, reflecting experience and leadership scope
  • Health, Dental, Vision, and 401(k) with 5% dollar-for-dollar company match
  • Unlimited PTO (restrictions apply) and 13 paid holidays
  • Company vehicle with all expenses covered (gas, maintenance)
  • Company-provided laptop, iPad, and technology tools
  • Remote (+field based), open to candidates with 90 miles of Corpus Christi

Overview

  • Supervise building inspectors and manage the inspection program for an active municipal services contract โ€” ensuring quality, compliance, and performance standards are met.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert supporting the sales team when pursuing new municipal inspection contracts; conduct client visits and represent technical authority to city stakeholders.
  • Administer and enforce municipal, state, and federal building codes, energy standards, safety requirements, and accessibility standards across a residential inspection program.
  • Oversee the issuance of building permits, plan approvals, occupancy certificates, and inspection reports; maintain accurate program records.
  • Interpret complex codes and provide guidance to contractors, builders, architects, and property owners.
  • Manage appeals, code updates, and ordinance revision processes as they arise.
  • Collaborate with fire, planning, zoning, engineering, and public works departments as needed for coordinated code enforcement.

Preferred Skills/Experiences

  • ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) credential required.
  • Active TSBPE Plumbing Inspector License required โ€” Texas state license, legally required to perform inspections.
  • Minimum 5โ€“7 years of progressive building inspection experience, with supervisory or program management responsibility.
  • Experience managing or supervising a team of inspectors strongly preferred.
  • Background working for or directly with a private or third-party inspection services firm preferred.
  • Additional ICC certifications a plus โ€” Residential Building Inspector, Combination Inspector, Electrical, Mechanical, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting business development or serving as a technical SME for sales efforts preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of permit administration, plan review, and residential new construction inspection processes.
  • Able to operate independently in a field-based environment with limited local oversight.
