What is a remote BSA?

Remote BSA roles refer to Business Systems Analysts who work from remote locations rather than a traditional office. These professionals analyze business needs, design solutions, and bridge the gap between business stakeholders and IT teams, all while working remotely. Their tasks often include gathering requirements, documenting processes, and ensuring technology solutions meet business objectives. Working remotely requires strong communication skills, self-motivation, and proficiency with digital collaboration tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote BSA?

To thrive as a Remote Business Systems Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, experience in requirements gathering, and a solid understanding of business processes, often supported by a degree in business, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, UML, and project management or requirements-tracking software (such as Jira or Trello) and relevant certifications (like CBAP or PMI-PBA) are typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and managing projects remotely. These competencies ensure the effective translation of business needs into technical solutions, driving successful project outcomes in a remote environment.

How does a remote BSA typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a virtual environment?

A Remote BSA often works closely with stakeholders from IT, business units, and project management through video calls, collaborative documentation platforms, and project management tools. Effective communication and proactive scheduling of virtual meetings are essential to ensure requirements are clearly understood and delivered. Remote BSAs are expected to be self-motivated, organized, and adept at using digital tools to facilitate workshops, gather requirements, and resolve issues. Building strong relationships remotely is key to ensuring successful project outcomes.

Our digital first approach enables our teams the flexibility to work remotely. We have offices in NYC and Boston.
What you'll do:
You will directly manage and mentor a team of BSA/AML analysts responsible for a range of activities including customer onboarding, transaction monitoring, investigations, and SAR filings. You will help foster a culture of compliance and continuous improvement within the Bank, while playing a key role in developing and maintaining processes and controls that align with the Bank's risk tolerance, while partnering with BaaS customers to ensure their BSA/AML Programs align with the Bank's standards.
  • Directly manage the team responsible for manually reviewing customer onboarding applications that are not automatically approved
  • Oversee the manual review process to ensure all necessary customer due diligence (CDD) is performed accurately and thoroughly
  • Make final decisions on these manually reviewed applications, determining whether to approve or deny the customer relationship based on the bank's risk policies
  • Maintain and regularly review the bank's high-risk customer list
  • Ensure that Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) is conducted on all high-risk customers at least annually
  • Manage and oversee the investigation and review of activity for all high-risk customers, documenting findings and making recommendations for account status changes
  • Directly manage the team of BSA/AML analysts responsible for monitoring transactions and reviewing system-generated alerts
  • Oversee the entire alert lifecycle, from initial review to investigation and escalation
  • Make the initial determination on whether to file a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) and ensure all filings are timely and accurate
  • Manage and oversee the OFAC screening process, including the investigation and resolution of potential matches
  • Oversee the intake, investigation, and reporting of Unusual Activity Referrals (UARs) received from FinTech partners
  • Collaborate with BaaS partners to ensure their internal controls and BSA/AML programs align with the bank's risk policies
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all law enforcement requests, including subpoenas and search warrants
  • Manage the process for responding to these requests, ensuring all responses are complete, accurate, and provided within required timeframes
  • Maintain detailed records of all requests and responses
  • Assist the BSA Officer in the development and maintenance of BSA/AML compliance policies and procedures
  • Manage and coordinate the bank's response to all BSA/AML/OFAC examinations and audits, both internal and external
  • Ensure timely remediation of any compliance deficiencies identified during examinations or audits

What you need:
  • 7-10+ years of progressive experience in BSA/AML compliance within a financial institution and/or financial technology (fintech) company
  • Proven experience managing or leading a team of compliance professionals
  • Expert knowledge of BSA, AML, and OFAC regulations
  • Hands-on experience with BSA/AML monitoring systems and case management
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and decision-making skills
  • CAMS certification is strongly preferred
