What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Brain Computer Interface Engineer, you need expertise in neuroscience, signal processing, software development, and ideally an advanced degree in biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or MATLAB), BCI platforms (like OpenBCI), and experience with EEG/EMG systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication abilities set candidates apart. These skills ensure the development and maintenance of robust BCI systems, successful remote collaboration, and the advancement of innovative neurotechnology solutions.

What are Remote Brain Computer Interface jobs?

Remote Brain Computer Interface (BCI) jobs involve designing, developing, testing, or supporting technologies that enable direct communication between the brain and external devices, all while working from a remote location. These roles can include research scientists, software engineers, data analysts, or user interface designers specializing in BCI applications. Professionals in this field collaborate virtually to advance neurotechnology, contribute to assistive devices, or improve human-computer interaction. Remote BCI jobs often require expertise in neuroscience, computer science, machine learning, and signal processing.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) roles?

Professionals in remote BCI positions often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams, managing sensitive data securely, and troubleshooting specialized hardware or software remotely. Since BCI projects typically involve neuroscientists, engineers, and software developers, clear communication and regular virtual meetings are essential for synchronizing progress. Additionally, remote work can make testing and debugging BCI devices more complex, requiring creative solutions and sometimes coordination with onsite staff or labs.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer: UI

WHO WE ARE

SwipeSense is a healthcare technology company on a mission to eliminate harm and waste in medicine. Hospitals use our platform to prevent infections, make better use of their equipment, and improve the patient experience.

We believe in the power of data and partner with hospital teams to provide them with insights to sustain positive behavior change and deliver a predictable patient journey. We value relentless experimentation, a locked-arms attitude, and a shared purpose to improve the future of healthcare.

Our vision is to be the safety platform for hospitals with a growing number of applications such as hand hygiene compliance improvement, asset tracking, nursing insights, and contact tracing.

WHO WE NEED

SwipeSense builds and manages large-scale distributed IoT hardware networks that produce massive amounts of real-time sensor data. We're looking for software engineers that have architected, worked in, or are excited to experience large scale, high volume, big data systems. We process billions of data points and terabytes of data daily and are scaling to petabyte-scale workloads.

At SwipeSense, we use the right tools for the job and with a system at this scale, we live on the cutting edge of technologies, always questioning and rebuilding core components of our platform to meet the scaling demands of the future. As a member of this team, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining these systems. We're looking for people with strong opinions about what you're building and how it's being built.

PRIMARY ROLE

You'll be responsible for leading the architecture and development of our software systems, ensuring an exceptional user experience. You'll be working in our AWS stack and helping collect, process, and display streaming sensor data in real-time to various internal and external consumers.

This role has wide breadth while the specialization is UI, the ideal candidate will be just as comfortable handling backend, database or cloud tasks where needed. We are a small team and appreciate broad skill sets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set and uphold the highest standards for UI/UX you don't need to be a designer and will have access to a Product team, but the ideal candidate will understand general best practices.
  • Optimize and design user-facing software for high-concurrency workloads. Ensure performance under realistic loads and access patterns.
  • Integrate frontend systems with backend services, handling backend/database work where needed.
  • Provide thorough tests and alerting to ensure resiliency.
  • Write well-documented code and be prepared to explain your solutions collaboratively; conduct and receive code reviews.
  • Work directly with Engineering and Product Management, as well as fellow engineers, to arrive at the best possible solution.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 6+ years of professional full-time experience.
  • BS/BA in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of JavaScript, including tooling and best practices.
  • Significant experience with SPA frameworks - React preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of HTML, CSS and web design/UI principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of the HTTP request cycle, web application architecture and REST.
  • Familiarity with backend development PHP/Laravel preferred.
  • Familiarity with Relational Databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Comfort in a terminal-heavy Linux/Mac environment.
  • Production experience with git.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Bonus (but not required):

  • Experience with mobile development, particularly with React Native and/or Flutter.
  • Familiarity with AWS.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails, Go or Python.

If your experience looks a little different from what we've identified and you think you can excel in this role, we'd love to learn more about you.

Please note: position is a full-time, exempt remote position operating in US eastern time. SwipeSense offers competitive compensation, and excellent medical and dental benefits. M/F/D/V Candidates must be a US Citizen, or a foreign citizen with a required work visa.
