Remote Book Design information

What is a remote book design?

A Remote Book Design job involves designing the layout, typography, and visual elements of a book while working from a remote location. Designers use software like Adobe InDesign or Affinity Publisher to create visually appealing and readable book interiors and covers. They collaborate with authors, publishers, and editors to ensure the design aligns with the book's content and audience. This role requires a strong understanding of design principles, typography, and formatting standards. Remote book designers often work as freelancers or with publishing companies that offer remote opportunities.

What are the typical responsibilities involved in a remote book design role?

As a Remote Book Designer, your daily tasks will include designing and formatting book interiors and covers, selecting appropriate fonts and layouts, and preparing files for both print and digital distribution. You will work closely with authors, publishers, and editors through video calls or email to refine concepts and incorporate feedback. Meeting deadlines and maintaining strong communication are crucial, as you often juggle multiple projects at once. This role offers the flexibility to work from home while collaborating with a creative, distributed team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote book design, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Book Designer, you need strong graphic design abilities, knowledge of typography, layout principles, and ideally a degree or certificate in graphic design or related fields. Proficiency in industry-standard tools like Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and familiarity with file preparation for print and digital publishing is essential. Excellent time management, communication, and attention to detail are important soft skills, especially when collaborating with authors and editors remotely. These skills ensure high-quality, visually appealing book designs that meet client specifications and deadlines in a virtual work environment.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Dover Industrial Engineering Director of Advanced Manufacturing, the Industrial Engineer is responsible for driving process optimization and operational efficiency across manufacturing operations. This role drives improvements in line balancing, takt time definition, and cycle time analysis, ensuring efficient throughput and optimal utilization of labor, equipment, and materials. The Industrial Engineer will lead the design and implementation of material handling strategies, PFEP structures, Kanban systems, and FIFO flow to support stable and responsive production lines. Key responsibilities include analyzing workflows, validating line setups, and standardizing processes using data-driven methodologies and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to eliminate waste, improve flow, and enhance overall performance, quality, and cost efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead the analysis, design, and optimization of assembly operations, ensuring efficient integration of product design, workstation layout, tooling, and standardized work.
• Drive line balancing and takt time adherence to achieve optimal throughput, labor efficiency, and consistent production flow across assembly lines.
• Design and implement end-to-end material flow strategies, including PFEP (Plan for Every Part), Kanban systems, and FIFO methodologies, to ensure material availability while minimizing inventory and handling waste.
• Optimize material presentation and line-side delivery, enabling one-piece flow, reducing motion and waiting waste, and improving operator productivity.
• Partner with OpCo to enhance Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through structured industrial engineering methods (e.g., SMED, TPM, bottleneck management, and capacity balancing).
• Develop and deploy Value Stream Maps (VSM) and conduct Cycle Time (CT) studies to identify constraints, eliminate waste, and improve overall process flow and lead time.
• Lead continuous flow implementation initiatives, transitioning batch processes into pull-based systems aligned with takt and customer demand.
• Define and standardize assembly workstation design principles, including ergonomics, tool positioning, and part flow, to ensure repeatability, safety, and efficiency.
• Develop Dover Enterprise Industrial Engineering Standards and deployment playbooks for assembly design, material flow, labor planning and manufacturing system architecture.
• Digital Play Book - partner with Dover Digital to deploy Digital work instructions and process controls and performance monitoring and feedback. Enable and deploy advanced digital tools for time study analysis and digital twins effectively bring value form simulation.
• Optimize plant layout and internal logistics flows, focusing on minimizing transportation, improving space utilization, and enabling scalable assembly operations.
• Establish and govern Kanban and pull replenishment systems, ensuring alignment with PFEP parameters and production consumption patterns.
• Strengthen internal capabilities by deploying standard work, visual management, and flow-based playbooks to support OpCo maturity progression.
• Conduct root cause analysis and structured problem solving to eliminate recurring disruptions in assembly flow, material shortages, or line inefficiencies.
• Lead and support continuous improvement and capital projects, with a focus on assembly automation, material handling systems, and flow optimization.
• Analyze performance data to identify gaps in line performance, material flow, and labor utilization, implementing sustainable corrective actions.
• Develop and maintain process documentation, including standard work, PFEP structures, material flow diagrams, and line balance sheets.
• Support new product introduction (NPI) ensuring assembly processes are designed for flow, scalability, and material synchronization from day one.
• Manage multiple OpCo initiatives, ensuring alignment with Dover's strategy and disciplined execution of assembly and flow transformation programs.
• Collaborate closely with Manufacturing Engineering (Advanced Manufacturing) teams to align equipment design, automation strategies, and industrialization efforts that support optimal assembly flow and material handling efficiency.
• Travel as required (up to 60%) to support OpCo engagement and onsite implementation of assembly and flow improvements.
Qualifications/Requirements/Desired Characteristics:
• Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering (preferred) or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering with strong focus on manufacturing systems and assembly operations.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in assembly-driven manufacturing environments, with a focus on flow optimization, line efficiency, and productivity improvement.
• Proven experience designing and improving assembly lines, including line balancing, takt time definition, and labor optimization.
• Strong expertise in material management and internal logistics systems, including PFEP (Plan for Every Part), Kanban, FIFO, and pull-based replenishment systems.
• Demonstrated experience in analyzing and optimizing end-to-end material flow, including line-side delivery, part presentation, and WIP control.
• Solid understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes, including workstation design, operator ergonomics, and one-piece flow implementation.
• Hands-on experience with Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Cycle Time (CT) studies, and bottleneck analysis to drive flow efficiency and lead-time reduction.
