What is a remote BMS estimator?

A Remote BMS Estimator is a professional who evaluates and estimates the cost and resources needed for installing or upgrading Building Management Systems (BMS) from a remote location. They analyze project specifications, review blueprints, and use specialized software to determine labor, material, and equipment requirements. This role is essential for ensuring accurate project budgets and helping organizations plan their BMS projects efficiently. Working remotely, they collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients using digital communication tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote BMS estimator?

To thrive as a Remote BMS Estimator, you need strong knowledge of building management systems, estimation techniques, and industry standards, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with estimation software (such as Trimble or Esticom), AutoCAD, and BMS-specific platforms is typically required. Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial for accurately assessing project requirements and collaborating with stakeholders remotely. These skills are essential to deliver precise cost estimates, foster client trust, and ensure the profitability of BMS projects.

How does a remote BMS estimator typically collaborate with on-site project teams and clients?

A Remote BMS Estimator often works closely with on-site project managers, engineers, and clients through digital communication tools such as video calls, shared documents, and project management platforms. They review project specifications, clarify requirements, and resolve discrepancies by coordinating virtually. While not physically present, they must maintain clear and proactive communication to ensure their estimates align with project needs and site realities. Building strong remote relationships is key to overcoming challenges related to distance and ensuring accurate, timely deliverables.

Job description

Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE:AMRC) is a leading energy solutions provider dedicated to helping customers reduce costs, enhance resilience, and decarbonize to net zero in the global energy transition. We are a trusted, full-service partner to public sector and government entities, K-12 schools, higher education, utilities, and healthcare customers across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Europe.

At Ameresco, we show the way by developing, constructing and operating tailored smart energy efficiency solutions, distributed energy resources, and infrastructure upgrades that drive cost savings, resilience, decarbonization, and innovation. Our comprehensive portfolio is built to address the challenges of today and adapt the future, ensuring long-term sustainability and success for our customers.

Ameresco has an immediate opening for a Energy Engineer / Analyst to join our Performance Engineering team, supporting a diverse multi-site portfolio spanning commercial office, K-12, healthcare, and government facilities. This role blends deep building systems expertise, data analytics fluency, and customer engagement - operating at the intersection of engineering, FDD/MBCx, and M&V.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate potential energy savings and demand reduction opportunities, including operational changes and capital measures.
  • Analyze interval (15-min/hourly) utility and sub-meter data to characterize load profiles, identify demand charge drivers, and detect anomalies.
  • Execute MBCx workflows including baseline establishment, ongoing performance monitoring, and savings persistence verification; identify and present operational ECMs to facility stakeholders.
  • Support the development and implementation of campus metering systems (electricity, gas, steam, chilled water); develop specifications and single-line diagrams; oversee meter commissioning and EMIS/DAS integration.
  • Configure, deploy, and manage FDD rule sets within EMIS/analytics platforms; triage and prioritize fault alerts and develop fault impact estimates to support O&M decision-making.
  • Measure and verify performance of energy management programs over time.
  • Deliver clear technical reports and presentations translating complex analytics into actionable guidance for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Computer Science, or related STEM field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in energy engineering, building performance analysis, or related discipline.
  • Travel Required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • CEM, CMVP, or CCP certification.
  • Prior customer-facing or consulting experience.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting, retro-commissioning, or monitoring based commissioning of HVAC systems and central cooling and heating plants.
  • Familiar with measurement and verification methods and protocols.
  • Working knowledge of BAS/BMS platforms.
  • Energy and data analysis experience, including:
    • Data driven modeling,
    • Interval meter data analysis,
    • Energy efficiency and demand reduction opportunities for HVAC, cooling and heating plants and distributed energy resources.
  • Working knowledge of advanced data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Python, R)
  • Experience leveraging AI tools effectively and appropriately in an energy engineering context.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; high emotional intelligence; solutions-oriented mindset with ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

The anticipated base salary range for this role is $70,000 - $100,000 (presented in good faith). In addition to base pay, employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, and may be eligible for performance incentives, bonuses, commissions, or equity, depending on the role.

Actual pay will depend on factors such as internal equity, skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. This range supports our commitment to pay transparency and compliance with applicable laws. Compensation may vary by work location, including remote arrangements.

We disclose salary ranges and benefits in all required external and internal postings and will provide further details upon request at any stage of the hiring process. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
