Remote biotechnology content writing involves creating scientific and technical content related to biotechnology topics while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. Writers in this field produce articles, blog posts, research summaries, white papers, and educational materials for companies, academic institutions, or publications. They must understand complex biotechnological concepts and be able to communicate them clearly to both professional and lay audiences. Strong research skills, knowledge of the biotech industry, and the ability to meet deadlines remotely are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote biotechnology content writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Biotechnology Content Writer, you need strong scientific knowledge, excellent writing skills, and typically a degree in biology or a related field. Familiarity with reference management tools, content management systems (CMS), and scientific databases is often required. Outstanding research abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, engaging, and trustworthy content that meets the needs of scientific and general audiences alike.

What are some common challenges faced by remote biotechnology content writers, and how can they overcome them?

Remote biotechnology content writers often encounter challenges such as staying current with rapidly evolving scientific topics, ensuring the accuracy of technical information, and maintaining clear communication with subject matter experts and editors. To overcome these obstacles, writers should develop strong research habits, build a network of reliable scientific sources, and utilize collaboration tools to keep in touch with their team. Being proactive in seeking feedback and participating in virtual meetings can also help maintain alignment and ensure high-quality content.

Job description

About MedSchoolCoach

MedSchoolCoach is a rapidly growing EdTech company that serves the needs of future physicians by providing the highest quality content, software, and one-to-one tutoring, and advising services. Physician-led and founded, MedSchoolCoach is driven by its mission to help shape the future of medicine. Over time, the organization has become one of the largest players in the medical space, reaching nearly 50% of prospective medical students every year through one of our products or services.

Working at MedSchoolCoach

We are a distributed team of creative, approachable, and motivated entrepreneurs, educators, tutors, advisors, and clinicians who are passionate about improving healthcare and education. At MedSchoolCoach, we value problem solvers who take initiative, communicate earnestly, work effectively, and prioritize life-work balance. We do everything we can to make sure our teammates are successful personally and professionally. We welcome all employee contributions in whatever shape or form they manifest, especially as our organization continues to grow.

About the Role

We are looking for individuals who have a passion for education and helping students applying to medical school. Working together with a physician advisor, the writing advisor will support medical school applicants through the application process in the form of helping the applicant draft, revise, and edit the personal statement, activities section, and secondary applications, among other materials. The goal is to provide polished documents that are compelling and representative of the applicant.

Scope

  • Develop a strong working relationship with the physician advisor, acting as a unified team that will support the applicant through the application process
  • Assist the applicant in restructuring content and ensuring responses and essays have a logical and cohesive flow
  • Provide suggestions and guiding questions that enable the applicant to develop content
  • Edit materials for clarity, tone, and syntax
  • Proofread materials for grammar and word choice
  • Answer questions about the writing process for specific materials
  • Provide relevant and actionable feedback
  • Maintain a supportive environment for the applicant

Most of the application materials that you will work on will require two or three revisions. The personal statement can be up to 5,300 characters. The activities section consists of 15 entries, with each one having a maximum limit of 700 characters. In addition to the 15 entries, the activities sections allows three activities to be noted as the applicant's "most meaningful" allowing the applicant to provide a response regarding their reasoning for this choice (1,500 characters, maximum). A secondary application can include 1-12 prompts with varying word count limits. The average response is 1-2 paragraphs. Many of our clients purchase packages that include assistance for five or 20 secondary applications. Clients may occasionally need editing services for other applications materials.

This is, largely, a seasonal position. Our peak season is from March until September. We expect that our advisors have consistent availability during this time. Also, this is a remote position that requires you to have a reliable connection to the Internet and access to Microsoft Word.
