Remote Bim Automation information

What is a remote BIM automation specialist?

A Remote BIM Automation Specialist is a professional who uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies and automation tools to streamline and optimize design, construction, or facility management processes from a remote location. They develop scripts, templates, and workflows to automate repetitive tasks, improve data accuracy, and enhance collaboration in virtual project environments. Their work often involves integrating BIM software like Revit or Navisworks with programming languages such as Dynamo, Python, or C#. This role is essential for organizations looking to increase efficiency and consistency in their digital construction projects while accommodating remote or distributed teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote BIM automation specialist?

To excel as a Remote BIM Automation Specialist, you need strong proficiency in Building Information Modeling (BIM), programming/scripting (such as Python or Dynamo), and a background in architecture, engineering, or construction. Experience with BIM software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and familiarity with automation tools and relevant certifications (e.g., Autodesk Certified Professional) are commonly required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for streamlining design workflows, improving project collaboration, and driving efficiency in digital construction environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a remote BIM automation role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in a Remote BIM Automation role is ensuring seamless collaboration and data consistency across geographically dispersed teams. Communication barriers and differences in software standards can sometimes lead to version conflicts or workflow inefficiencies. To address these issues, many organizations implement centralized cloud-based BIM platforms, enforce standardized templates, and schedule regular coordination meetings. Staying proactive with clear documentation and adopting automation scripts to streamline repetitive tasks also helps maintain productivity and project accuracy.

What is the difference between Remote Bim Automation vs Remote Bim Coordinator?

AspectRemote Bim AutomationRemote Bim Coordinator
Primary RoleDevelops and implements BIM automation workflows and scriptsCoordinates BIM models, manages project data, and ensures standards compliance
Required SkillsRevit, Dynamo, scripting (Python, C#), BIM softwareBIM software, project management, communication skills
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, BIM departments, remote collaborationProject teams, client meetings, remote or onsite
CertificationsRevit, Dynamo, BIM certificationsBIM management, project management certifications

Remote Bim Automation focuses on creating automation workflows to streamline BIM processes, while Remote Bim Coordinator manages BIM models and project coordination. Both roles require BIM software knowledge, but the automation role emphasizes scripting and technical development, whereas the coordinator role emphasizes project oversight and communication.

Job description

The Digital Delivery Specialist supports large-scale engineering and construction projects by developing and maintaining federated model workflows and the infrastructure that supports them. This role focuses on automation pipelines, system reliability, and model aggregation processes to ensure multidisciplinary models are consistently updated and available for coordination and design review.  The digital delivery technology environment includes tools such as Smart3D (S3D), Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks, Tekla, and CAD platforms from both internal and external sources. By improving the reliability and efficiency of federated model systems, this role enables project teams to spend less time managing models and more time solving engineering challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage federated models used for multidisciplinary coordination across large engineering and construction projects.
  • Maintain and support automated master file workflows that generate Navisworks, IFC, and DWG deliverables from Smart3D (S3D).
  • Administer and maintain remote machines running batch processes for model federation and export workflows.
  • Monitor server performance and automation pipelines to ensure reliable operation and timely model updates.
  • Troubleshoot automation failures, model export errors, and infrastructure issues affecting federated model workflows.
  • Develop and implement standardized interference checking processes to support model coordination and design review.
  • Support development of a roadmap to migrate federated model automations to a dedicated standalone server environment to improve reliability and reduce traffic.
  • Identify opportunities to improve model aggregation workflows through scripting, automation, and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with project teams and technology leadership to improve digital delivery workflows and model management practices.
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging digital delivery tools and technologies that improve model coordination and project delivery efficiency.
  • Document automated workflows and provide guidance to project teams supporting federated model processes.
  • Bachelor's degree in virtual design and construction, Engineering Technology, or a related field from an accredited program and 4 years of experience planning, training, organizing, and delivering complex BIM models and related digital products across project teams required.
  • Or Associate's degree and 6 years of experience planning, training, organizing, and delivering complex BIM models and related digital products across project teams required.
  • Or 8 years of experience planning, training, organizing, and delivering complex BIM models and related digital products across project teams in lieu of a degree required.
  • Experience supporting large industrial, energy, or infrastructure projects strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting BIM, digital delivery, or model coordination workflows within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with federated models and coordination platforms such as Navisworks strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Smart 3D (S3D), IFC workflows, and CAD-based deliverables strongly preferred.
  • Experience maintaining automated workflows, scripting processes, or batch automation systems strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of multidisciplinary model coordination and interference checking processes strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting remote machines, servers, or virtual environments used to run automated workflows strongly preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills related to automation systems, model pipelines, and digital delivery infrastructure strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate technical workflows and support project teams using federated models strongly preferred.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize new software programs.
  • Ability to execute and integrate digital delivery into EPC projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of digital delivery software, standards, and project deliverables.
  • Ability to integrate multiple BIM models across various software platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
