They focus on ensuring that the application's data and processes function smoothly, securely, and efficiently. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams using digital tools to manage projects, communicate, and deploy code. Proactively reaching out, maintaining regular updates, and participating in virtual standups or sprint meetings are key strategies to overcome these challenges and foster effective teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Backend Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Backend Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of database management and software architecture. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), version control systems (like Git), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required, and certifications in cloud computing or backend frameworks can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear written communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies enable efficient development, seamless teamwork, and the effective building and maintenance of scalable backend systems in a distributed work environment.

Job description

About Patio
At Patio, we are building the future of group communication. Patio is the private community for college: we make it easy for college students and incoming freshmen to chat with classmates in a safe and welcoming space.
We've grown quickly since we launched and are funded by leading investors including Forerunner Ventures (backed Glossier, Hims & Hers, Chime, Warby Parker), Redpoint Ventures (backed Stripe, Snowflake, Nextdoor, Twilio), and others.
We are a remote-only startup looking for passionate teammates who are excited to build useful social tools. We take our work seriously, but that doesn't stop us from having fun in a diverse and collaborative work environment. Pull up a chair and join us at Patio. We're excited to meet you!
Our Tech Stack
  • node.js
  • Typescript
  • AWS
  • Terraform
  • Postgres/Hasura
  • Docker
  • React Native for the mobile app
  • React for the web app
Role
We are looking for someone who can help us scale up our backend to millions of users. As the senior backend and infrastructure engineer, you will provide insight into how we can optimize our backend infrastructure as we continue to expand. As a chat application, our backend needs to be performant at scale and your work will go directly towards making that happen. You will have a key role in shaping our backend infrastructure and supporting the rest of the engineering team as they work on new features. This role is absolutely critical to ensuring a great product experience for our users.
Responsibilities
  • Define and implement the vision behind scaling up our backend and infrastructure
  • Ensure platform stability and performance by setting up the necessary infrastructure to monitor and react to issues as they arise
  • Work with PM and other developers to push out core product features
  • Mentor and unblock other engineers on the team
  • Interview candidates and help with hiring and onboarding more engineers to the team
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of professional software development experience
  • Experience scaling backends from 10k+ users to millions of users
  • Experience using Postgres and optimizing database load
  • Experience using AWS infrastructure (Terraform a plus)
  • Experience writing Javascript backend functions (serverless a plus)
  • Solid understanding of best practices for both performance and security
  • Familiarity with GraphQL / React / React Native nice to have but not required
  • Communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally.
  • Reside in USA/Canada: we are a distributed company that likes to minimize the time zone spread within the team.
What we offer
At Patio, we offer resources that emphasize personal and familial well-being. We offer healthcare coverage for you and your family, including medical, dental, and vision. We offer parental leave, paid-time off and flexible working arrangements. Benefits include:
  • Competitive Salary
  • Meaningful Equity
  • Competitive Benefits
  • Generous PTO / sick leave
  • Mental health support + virtual care
  • Annual company retreat
