Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to own the design, build, and maintenance of our Azure-native data platform. This role sits at the intersection of infrastructure reliability and analytics delivery, supporting clinical and operational reporting across a healthcare environment. You will work closely with the SVP of IT and BI Director to ensure pipelines are robust, data is trustworthy, and the platform scales with organizational growth.
This is a high-ownership role for an engineer who can operate independently, communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and hold a high bar on data quality and platform governance in a HIPAA-regulated environment.
Core Responsibilities
Data Pipeline amp; Integration
  • Design, build, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory
  • Manage end-to-end data flows from source systems (EHR, operational platforms, third-party feeds) into Azure SQL
  • Monitor pipeline health, implement alerting, and resolve failures with minimal downtime
  • Develop and maintain reusable templates and integration patterns across SFTP, API, HL7, and AWS pipelines
Azure SQL amp; Data Platform
  • Architect and administer Azure SQL databases including schema design, maintenance, query optimization, and capacity planning
  • Manage environments across dev/test/prod with appropriate access controls and change management
  • Implement and enforce data retention, backup, and recovery procedures aligned to HIPAA requirements
  • Evaluate and adopt relevant Azure data services (Microsoft Fabric, Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake) as appropriate
BI amp; Reporting Support
  • Partner with the BI Manager to ensure clean, well-modeled data layers that support Power BI report development
  • Build and maintain semantic/presentation layers in Azure SQL or Fabric to enable self-service analytics
  • Support dashboard performance and data freshness SLAs for clinical and operational consumers
  • Assist with Power BI / Tableau report development as needed
Governance amp; Compliance
  • Enforce data governance standards including lineage, cataloging, and access control
  • Ensure all data handling practices comply with HIPAA and organizational security policies
  • Document pipelines, data models, and platform architecture; maintain current runbooks
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of data engineering experience in production environments
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Azure Data Factory -- pipeline authoring, parameterization, triggers, monitoring
  • Strong Azure SQL proficiency: schema design, performance tuning, security
  • Working knowledge of Power BI data model dependencies and BI-layer design
  • Experience managing data platforms across dev/test/prod in an Azure environment
  • Demonstrated experience in healthcare or other regulated industries managing sensitive data
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment with high accountability
  • An in-person interview is required for this position
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Dataflows Gen2, Data Pipelines)
  • Familiarity with Azure Synapse Analytics or Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2
  • Exposure to EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, or similar) and HL7/FHIR data formats
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203) or equivalent
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code or CI/CD for data pipelines (Azure DevOps, Git)
