Job Summary

Our client a leading communications provider is seeking a Network Engineer to join their team! This position is located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

We are seeking an experienced Network Engineer IV to support the design, implementation, and optimization of complex network systems. This role requires deep technical expertise in routing protocols—particularly BGP—and a strong foundation in network architecture, resiliency, and troubleshooting within large-scale environments.

Core Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and implement high-complexity network systems and architectures
  • Develop, maintain, and improve network configurations, standards, and protocol compatibility
  • Create and execute Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for network changes and enhancements
  • Analyze and validate network topologies, ensuring systems are properly integrated, operational, and resilient
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and escalation support across internal teams and external vendors
  • Participate in network planning, architecture design, and engineering initiatives
  • Contribute to and lead technical projects as needed
  • Produce and maintain detailed network diagrams using tools such as Visio or Lucidchart
  • Mentor and support junior engineers
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and operational standards

Required Skills/Experience (Must-Haves)

  • Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Deep understanding of networking fundamentals, including: OSI, TCP/IP models, and Optical transport concepts
  • Advanced expertise in BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) — candidates must be able to confidently design, implement, troubleshoot, and discuss BGP in depth without prompting
  • Solid experience with additional routing protocols: OSPF, IS-IS, and Multicast
  • Strong Layer 2 knowledge, including: Spanning Tree (STP), FabricPath, vPC / MLAG, HSRP / VRRP and XLAN / EVPN overlays
  • Proven understanding of network architecture and design, including: Spine-leaf data center topologies, backbone and autonomous system design and Hub-and-spoke models
  • Experience integrating hardware, software, and protocols into scalable network configurations
  • Proficiency with network diagramming tools (e.g., Visio, Lucidchart)

Preferred Skills/Experience (Nice-to-Haves)

  • 7+ years of experience in network engineering
  • Experience working in large-scale, service provider, or enterprise environments
  • Familiarity with network migrations and infrastructure modernization efforts
  • Experience with load balancing technologies (nice to have, not required)
  • Experience using Jira for ticket management and workflow prioritization
  • Industry certifications (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Arista) are a plus but not required
