Job description

Axiom is seeking a HADS Programmer II to join our team in providing technical support services to the Sterling Field Support Center (SFSC). This position is based in Silver Spring, Maryland at the National Weather Service, but is fully remote.

The overall objective of this program is to operate and maintain a state-of-the-art meteorological laboratory/facility for the evaluation and life cycle support of equipment and software used to make meteorological observations.

Responsibilities include

  • Supporting the Project Manager for the Hydrometeorological Automated Data System (HADS).
  • System maintenance and upkeep of primary and backup servers, maintaining connectivity and security of the dedicated circuit from Wallops Island to the NWSTG and the downlink of data from DOMSAT. Ensuring information and IT security controls are implemented and monitored.
  • Implementing and monitoring the HADS local network diagnosing and resolving operating problems and ensuring that proposed applications will function in the current network environment. Analyzing ADP equipment; and makes recommendations for replacement of obsolete or non-efficient equipment.
  • Identifying, evaluating, and resolving causes of malfunctions, rapidly responding to and resolving problems with hardware and software vulnerabilities. As required, evaluating COTS (commercial off the shelf) solutions or vendor developed software to assure that they provide the desired results.
  • Performing all primary Database Administrator (DBA) duties and support for the NEXHADS and Decoded data Database, associated servers, utility servers and databases, including development, management and maintenance of databases, tables, user roles, forms, reports, connections, data transfers and security.
  • Managing the acquisition of raw hydrological and meteorological observation messages from Geostationary Operations Environmental.
  • Operating as a subject matter expert for IT system administration, such as server configuration, virtual configuration files system configuration, advance file systems management, security, storage area networks, or hardware architecture; and
  • Solving debugging or troubleshooting problems related to the flow of information and data between computer systems.
  • Normalizing of data sets, data acquisitions systems, command and control programs;
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and modifying programming systems including encoding, testing, debugging and installing to support an organization's application systems;
  • Consulting with users to identify current operating procedures and to clarify program objectives;
  • May be expected to write documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections.

This position requires a B.S. degree in Computer Science or 4 years of applicable experience and at least the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA). Background in Meteorology, Oceanography and/or Hydrology highly desireable.
