Remote Autonomous Vehicle information

What is a remote autonomous vehicle?

A Remote Autonomous Vehicle job involves monitoring, controlling, and supporting autonomous vehicles from a remote location. Operators may intervene when the vehicle encounters situations it cannot handle on its own, ensuring safe navigation. Roles in this field can include remote driving, fleet management, and technical support. These jobs are critical for improving the reliability and performance of self-driving technology.

What does a remote autonomous vehicle operator do?

As a Remote Autonomous Vehicle Operator, your day often involves monitoring and controlling autonomous vehicles via a remote interface, ensuring their navigation and safety through diverse environments. You'll routinely communicate with engineering and support teams to address system alerts, troubleshoot technical issues, and follow established safety procedures. The role may include structured shifts, with some operators working evenings or weekends, particularly in support of round-the-clock vehicle operations. This collaborative environment allows you to play a vital role in advancing the adoption and reliability of autonomous vehicle technology while contributing to ongoing process improvements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote autonomous vehicle position?

To thrive in a Remote Autonomous Vehicle Operator position, you need a solid understanding of vehicle technology, remote control systems, and situational awareness, often supported by a technical or engineering background. Familiarity with teleoperation platforms, safety protocols, and specialized software such as remote monitoring tools is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help operators manage real-time challenges and coordinate with technical teams. These qualifications are vital to ensuring safe and efficient vehicle operation while minimizing risks in dynamic environments.

Job description

Zoox is hiring software engineers to build the tools that power our autonomous ride-hailing service. The Operational Tools team plays a critical role in bringing Zoox’s vision of autonomous mobility to life.

We’re building a collaborative, high-performing team with diverse technical backgrounds and perspectives. If you’re excited about creating impactful software and tackling one of the most ambitious engineering challenges of our time, we’d love to hear from you.

Our Operational Tools enable the safe, reliable, and scalable operation of Zoox’s growing fleet of autonomous robotaxis. As a member of the team, you’ll work closely with product managers, designers, QA engineers, and remote operators to develop full-stack web applications that support fleet monitoring and operations at scale. You’ll also help build in-vehicle visualization systems and real-time rider support tools that directly shape the customer experience.

This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex, cross-functional problems, working across domains, and building innovative systems with visible, real-world impact.

In this role you will:
  • Design and implement highly scalable and reliable web applications to support Zoox's autonomous robotaxi service under the supervision of more senior engineers

  • Collaborate with software engineering teams, PMs, designers  to build new features.

  • Collaborate with experienced engineers to enhance existing software systems by optimizing latency, CPU/memory usage, and database queries.

  • Have the chance to grow into a Senior Engineer with the support of your manager, mentor and team members.

Qualifications:
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, plus 3+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, or Python.
  • Experience building applications with modern frontend frameworks (e.g. React, Vue, Svelte) and/or backend web frameworks (e.g. Flask, FastAPI).
  • Experience leveraging AI-powered development tools and workflows to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and user experiences.
Bonus Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in a low-level language such as Java, Kotlin, C, C++, or Rust.

  • Familiarity with low-level Linux system protocols, firmware, and ECUs.

  • Experience developing tools that support operations.
