What is a remote automation engineer?

A Remote Automation Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated systems and processes, often working from a remote location rather than on-site. They typically focus on creating scripts, tools, and workflows that help improve efficiency, quality, and reliability in software development, IT operations, or industrial processes. Their responsibilities may include writing code for test automation, configuring CI/CD pipelines, and collaborating with remote teams to optimize business operations. Working remotely allows them to support projects in various locations while leveraging digital communication and collaboration tools.

What does a remote automation engineer do?

A remote automation engineer uses technology to streamline, improve, and automate the manufacturing process. Your responsibilities in this work from home position include QA duties, testing software, developing computer systems, simulating programs, and using sensors to get accurate measurements. Your duties construct the automation processes of a specific manufacturing process. The different processes you work with govern the delivery and production of the process. You streamline processes for maximum efficiency without violating regulations or sacrificing the quality of products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, scripting languages (such as Python or JavaScript), and automation frameworks, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, testing tools like Selenium or Jenkins, and certifications such as ISTQB or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are critical soft skills for collaborating effectively in a distributed environment. These competencies ensure efficient automation processes, seamless integration, and successful remote teamwork in fast-paced technology projects.

How do remote automation engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams to ensure project success?

Remote Automation Engineers often work closely with on-site teams through regular video meetings, collaborative project management tools, and shared documentation platforms. Clear communication is key, as remote engineers may need to coordinate testing schedules, troubleshoot issues in real-time, and provide virtual support during equipment installation or updates. It's common to use remote desktop software and cloud-based environments to access systems securely. Proactive communication and responsiveness help bridge the distance, ensuring that automation projects stay on track and meet quality standards.

Job description

Location:Fully Remote, United States
Position Type: Full-Time

Clearance: U.S. citizenship is required. The candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain federal suitability, a government-issued PIV credential, and required system access.

The Opportunity

TeamWorx Security is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain enterprise data platforms and pipelines for a federal government client. The Data Engineer will work with technical teams, program leadership, and government stakeholders to integrate complex data sources, improve data quality, and deliver secure, scalable data products that support analytics, automation, artificial intelligence, and operational decision-making. This work supports enterprise data efforts that span multiple business lines, so priorities shift as different teams need help.

The work rewards engineers who can move between projects, learn a new business area quickly, and apply their skills wherever the need is greatest. The ideal candidate brings strong data engineering fundamentals, hands-on experience delivering production solutions in an enterprise Databricks environment, and familiarity with Google Cloud Platform.

Success in this role requires initiative, ownership, and clear communication. The Senior Data Engineer is expected to work through ambiguity, identify needs or risks before they become problems, and move assignments forward without waiting for detailed direction. This person must communicate progress, decisions, and obstacles clearly while remaining accountable for work through delivery and ongoing support.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, build, deploy, and support production data pipelines and enterprise data solutions using Databricks, Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, Python, SQL, and related technologies.
  • Develop enterprise data models and layered data architectures that transform information from multiple source systems into reliable, reusable data products for analytics, applications, reporting, automation, and AI/ML.
  • Extract, transform, validate, and analyze data from multiple sources to support reporting, business intelligence, AI, and operational decision-making.
  • Ensure data quality, security, governance, traceability, and compliance throughout the data lifecycle.
  • Work with technical teams and federal stakeholders to define requirements, evaluate options, document solutions, and resolve technical issues.
  • Evaluate and apply new technologies based on customer needs while supporting testing, deployment, production operations, and continued improvement.

What We Think You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 12 or more years of relevant data engineering, software engineering, data architecture, or technical delivery experience.
  • Master's degree and 10 years of experience also considered.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience delivering production data engineering solutions in an enterprise Databricks environment, including data pipelines and orchestration, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, CI/CD and deployment, and enterprise security and governance practices.
  • Experience across a range of data engineering technologies, which may include GCP, BigQuery, Python, SQL, JavaScript, Google Apps Script, APIs, cloud platforms, databases, and visualization tools.
  • Understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT, data quality, governance, security, and production support.
  • Strong problem-solving, documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new platforms, tools, and technical approaches as project needs change.
