What are Building Automation Design Engineers?

Building Automation Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems that control various functions within buildings, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and security. Their work ensures buildings operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably while optimizing energy usage. They collaborate with architects, contractors, and facility managers to integrate automation systems into new or existing structures. These engineers must have a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, as well as proficiency in specialized software used for system design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Building Automation Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, HVAC systems, and building automation principles, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in system design. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), AutoCAD, PLC programming, and certifications like LEED or Tridium Niagara are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, and effective communication with clients and contractors set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and sustainable building operations that meet client and regulatory expectations.

What are some typical challenges Building Automation Design Engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing building systems?

Building Automation Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, managing cybersecurity risks, and minimizing disruption to building operations. They must carefully assess existing infrastructure, coordinate with facility managers, and develop phased implementation plans to ensure smooth transitions. Ready to grow your career while driving the future of smart buildings?
At Smart Building Technologies (SBT), a Fidelity company, we're helping facilities run smarter, safer, and more efficiently through innovative building automation and control solutions.
We're looking for a Design Engineer who's passionate about technology, detail-oriented, and ready to help shape high-performance environments through exceptional system design.
If you love solving complex challenges, turning technical concepts into reality, and working alongside a collaborative, fast-paced team - this is your opportunity to make an impact.
What You'll Do:
• Design complete building automation systems including mechanical system layouts, electrical drawings, bills of materials, sequences of operations, valve and damper schedules, and DDC panel layouts.
• Determine the best mix of products and installation methods to deliver cost-effective, efficient project solutions.
• Prepare submittals, shop drawings, and schedules for handoff to Operations.
• Act as a technical resource for team members and customers throughout project development.
• Participate in sales-to-operations turnover meetings to validate project accuracy and design intent.
• Conduct on-site walkthroughs as needed to refine project design.
• Design network architectures supporting operator workstations, DDC field panels, and third-party integrations (LON, Ethernet, Modbus, BACnet).
• Review plans, specifications, and codes to assess project requirements and risks.
• Generate DDC point databases and provide startup documentation for commissioning.
• Support engineering re-estimates and communicate scope updates to Project Managers.
• Prepare and issue RFIs when clarification is needed.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and maintain complete, organized project documentation.
What You'll Bring to the Table:
• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with Delta and/or Reliable Controls design preferred.
• 2-5 years of engineering or systems design experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
• Strong understanding of building automation, mechanical systems, and design principles.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Independent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
Why You'll Love It Here:
• Professional Development: Access to training, workshops, and certifications to sharpen your skills and grow your career.
• Career Advancement: Clear pathways for growth within Fidelity Building Services Group's network of companies.
• Generous PTO: Ample paid time off to rest, recharge, and spend time doing what you love.
• Health & Well-being: Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
• Competitive Pay: $80k+ Salary commensurate with experience, plus opportunities for performance-based incentives.
