Job description

Vox is seeking a technically skilled, experienced and organized Video/Audio producer to make the video and audio versions of The Gray Area, Vox's philosophy-minded, conversation-driven podcast. This twice-weekly show brings deep, nuanced discussions about ideas, ethics, politics, and culture to a broad audience.

We are looking for an editorial-minded producer who can suggest guests, coordinate bookings, prepare guests, manage technical workflows, edit full episodes including implementing first cuts. This person must have experience working with YouTube, and will direct host intros, create thumbnails and other assets, and oversee YouTube publishing.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Assembling, refining, and packaging the video podcast in Descript. You will shape the pacing, clarity, and visual presentation of each episode and ensure both formats deliver a compelling, high-quality viewer and listener experience.
  • Lead the complete video editing workflow for each episode in Descript, shaping visual pacing, structure, and clarity.
  • Handle multi-track/multi-camera assembly, visual layout adjustments, framing continuity, and sync across tracks.
  • Record and remotely direct host video intros, ensuring consistency in framing, lighting, and delivery.
  • Prepare and refine video assets such as thumbnails, captions, on-screen text, and other YouTube-optimized elements.
  • Use Premiere (and occasionally After Effects) for more advanced edits, touch-ups, or template adjustments when needed.
  • Maintain efficient ingest-to-publish workflows for all video materials.

Audio Production & Engineering

  • Produce polished audio using Descript and Pro Tools. Should have experience with audio mixing/engineering audio.
  • Edit the complete audio version of each episode in Descript, ensuring clarity, structure, and pacing appropriate for idea-driven conversations.
  • Perform detailed cleanup, leveling, noise reduction, and mixing in Pro Tools.
  • Manage technical logistics for studio and remote recordings (Riverside or similar tools).

Editorial & Workflow

  • Conduct focused research and prepare guest materials that support deep, philosophical conversation.
  • Assist with guest booking, scheduling, and communication.
  • Contribute booking suggestions, pitch new episode and guest ideas, and suggest ideas for conversation structure, prep documents, and interview flow.
  • Make editorial decisions and implement first edits to video interviews
  • Write accurate, engaging episode descriptions for YouTube and podcast platforms.
  • Own the YouTube publishing workflow: upload videos, schedule releases, implement metadata best practices, and QC for accuracy.
  • Ensure platform consistency across thumbnails, tags, titles, captions, and playlists.
  • Collaborate with social and audience teams to create promotional clips and assets.
WHO YOU ARE
  • 5+ years producing high-quality video and audio content, ideally for longform conversational, interview-driven, or idea-focused shows.
  • 5+ years of audio engineering experience in podcast production, radio, or other audio production.
  • Strong expertise in Descript for both video and audio editing.
  • Solid proficiency in Pro Tools for advanced audio cleanup and mixing.
  • Strong working knowledge of Premiere, with familiarity in After Effects for light motion graphics or template adjustments.
  • Substantial experience with YouTube publishing best practices-including thumbnails, titles, descriptions, tags, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with Riverside or similar remote recording tools.
  • Experience with remote production workflows involving multiple collaborators and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience with microphones, eq, compression, and producing content to meet loudness standards.
  • Demonstrated experience with Pro Tools, Izotope RX, Riverside or other remote AoIP production platforms, and other common audio production tools.
