Job description

The Senior Software Developer serves as a technical leader on an agile team supporting a portfolio of established Microsoft .NET applications and one legacy Classic ASP application. This is primarily a sustaining engineering role: keeping business-critical systems stable, secure, and well documented, delivering targeted enhancements, and mentoring developers across local, remote, and offshore Team Partners.
We are looking for an experienced, dependable developer who takes pride in systems that run well and teams that run well. This role rewards steady execution and sound judgment more than it rewards greenfield development.
What this role is (and what it isn't):

  • The application portfolio is mature and stable. Much of the work is maintenance, production support, defect resolution, and small-to-moderate enhancements. Large new builds are not on the near-term horizon.
  • One of the applications is a legacy Classic ASP system. Supporting it is a real part of this job, not a footnote.
  • Our long-term modernization strategy is still being defined. Whoever fills this role will have meaningful input into shaping it.
  • Production support is handled during normal business hours. There is no after-hours on-call rotation.

Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day technical direction for the team and serve as the primary point of escalation for complex issues.
  • Mentor and develop team members, including offshore Team Partners, through pairing, code review, and knowledge sharing.
  • Establish and uphold coding standards, review practices, and a clear definition of done.
  • Coordinate work across local, remote, and offshore team members, including managing time zone overlaps and handoffs.
  • Contribute feedback to IT leadership and product owners to help inform future technology direction.

Development & Support

  • Create quality deliverables that follow UniFirst standards and best practices.
  • Diagnose and resolve production defects and system issues across multiple environments.
  • Collaborate with product owners to analyze requirements and design practical, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Deliver enhancements that meet performance, scalability, and security requirements.
  • Maintain and support the legacy Classic ASP application and help reduce risk within it over time.
  • Partner with infrastructure and DevOps teams on deployment, monitoring, and release management.
  • Collaborate with data teams to improve data quality, consistency, and reporting.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and knowledge articles.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and improve existing workflows, including appropriate use of AI tooling.
  • Ensure solutions comply with security, regulatory, and governance standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 8 years of related application development experience.
  • 5 years with Microsoft's .NET development platforms, specifically .NET Framework 4.6.2 and 4.8.
  • Significant experience with C#.
  • Entity Framework 6 or earlier using a Database-First approach.
  • SQL Server, including writing and troubleshooting complex T-SQL.

  • Object-oriented programming and common design patterns.
  • Unit testing with NUnit, xUnit, or a comparable framework.
  • Continuous integration and continuous deployment using Azure DevOps.
  • Working experience on an agile team using Scrum or Kanban methodology.

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring, leading, or setting technical direction for other developers.
  • Willingness to work in and support legacy codebases, including Classic ASP and VBScript.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including communicating with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and efficiently.
  • Regular collaboration with offshore Team Partners requires some flexibility for early-morning meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on Classic ASP or VBScript experience.
  • SSIS/DTSX and SSRS.
  • Microsoft web or mobile application development (UWP, Xamarin Forms, MAUI).
  • Experience working with offshore development partners.
  • Experience modernizing or migrating .NET Framework applications to .NET 8 or later.
