What You'll Be Doing
As a valuable part of the Tighe & Bond Team, the Technical Director will lead a growing team focused on delivering complex waterfront, marine, and coastal infrastructure projects. This role combines technical leadership, business development, client engagement, and staff mentorship, with the opportunity to help shape the strategic direction and continued expansion of the practice. Some of your responsibilities will be:
  • Leading and expanding the Waterfront and Coastal practice, driving strategic growth, operational excellence, and technical innovation across the business line
  • Guiding project staffing and team development efforts, ensuring the right resources are aligned to deliver exceptional client service while supporting the continued growth of the practice
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering talent, fostering a collaborative culture focused on technical excellence, career growth, and knowledge sharing
  • Build and strengthen relationships with public and private sector clients, regulatory agencies, and industry partners to identify and secure new opportunities
  • Lead business development initiatives including strategic pursuits, proposal development, client presentations, and project interviews
  • Serve as a senior advisor on complex waterfront and coastal infrastructure projects, providing technical leadership from planning and permitting through design and construction
  • Oversee project performance, including scope development, budgets, schedules, quality management, and client communication
  • Collaborate with firm leadership to shape the long-term vision for the Waterfront and Coastal practice, identifying emerging markets, service offerings, and innovation opportunities
  • Provide subject matter expertise in coastal resilience, shoreline stabilization, ports and harbors, marine infrastructure, flood mitigation, and climate adaptation initiatives
  • Represent the firm externally through industry conferences, professional organizations, technical publications, and speaking engagements to elevate the firm's visibility and reputation
  • Partner across disciplines and offices to deliver integrated solutions that address complex environmental, infrastructure, and community challenges

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Coastal, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • 20+ years of progressive experience in waterfront, coastal, or marine engineering, including significant leadership experience
  • Demonstrated success leading complex coastal infrastructure and resilience projects from concept through construction
  • Strong business development and client management experience with a proven ability to grow relationships and win work
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing staff performance, mentorship, and professional development
  • Deep understanding of project management principles including scopes, budgets, schedules, risk management, and quality control
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to balance technical leadership, operational management, and business growth

Preferred Requirements
  • Master's degree in Civil, Coastal, or Environmental Engineering
  • Experience leading climate resilience, adaptation, and nature-based coastal solutions projects
  • Familiarity with permitting and regulatory frameworks throughout the Northeastern United States
  • Active participation in professional organizations such as ASCE COPRI, PIANC, or similar industry associations
  • Experience developing and executing strategic growth plans for technical practices or business lines
  • Knowledge of sustainable and resilient design approaches for waterfront and coastal infrastructure
  • Established industry presence through speaking engagements, publications, or leadership within professional organizations
