Job description

Staff Software Engineer – Full Stack / AI

Global Placement Firm is conducting a confidential search for a Staff Software Engineer to join an early-stage, high-growth healthcare technology company building modern software infrastructure for hospital nutrition and clinical workflows.

This is a full-stack engineering role with a strong backend and AI focus, ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys owning projects end-to-end, working across the technology stack, and helping shape both product and engineering culture at an early-stage startup.

Position Overview

The Staff Software Engineer will play a key role in building and scaling a cloud-based healthcare platform that improves hospital operations, patient experiences, safety, and efficiency.

You'll work across React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, AWS Lambda, and modern serverless infrastructure, while helping integrate AI and automation into both the development process and the product itself.

This is an opportunity for an engineer who wants significant ownership and enjoys working at the intersection of software engineering, AI, healthcare, and high-impact product development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and deliver impactful features across the full technology stack, including React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, and AWS Lambda.
  • Design robust, scalable, and extensible systems capable of supporting complex healthcare workflows.
  • Own projects from initial requirements and technical architecture through development, launch, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and integrate AI/LLM-powered features that improve automation, workflow efficiency, and the user experience.
  • Use modern AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and ChatGPT to accelerate development and improve engineering quality.
  • Partner closely with product and clinical stakeholders to evaluate technical tradeoffs involving safety, usability, reliability, and automation.
  • Help establish engineering best practices, development processes, and standards as the company scales.
  • Identify technical risks and raise concerns early while working collaboratively toward practical solutions.
  • Lead engineering projects involving other engineers while remaining hands-on with architecture and implementation.
  • Contribute across infrastructure, backend services, application development, and user-facing experiences.
  • Improve system reliability, performance, maintainability, and scalability as the platform grows.
  • Help shape the company's engineering culture and contribute to building a high-performing technical organization.
Required Qualifications
  • 5–8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong backend and full-stack experience.
  • At least 2 years in a senior-level engineering role.
  • Strong experience building modern full-stack applications.
  • Professional experience with TypeScript and React or comparable modern frontend technologies.
  • Strong backend development experience with Python, Go, Ruby, or a similar modern backend language.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, serverless architecture, infrastructure-as-code, or Terraform.
  • Experience building or shipping AI/LLM-powered applications or features.
  • Regular experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Copilot, or ChatGPT.
  • Experience working in a startup or rapidly scaling technology environment.
  • Experience leading an engineering project involving at least one other engineer; this is project leadership rather than formal people management.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, reliability, and engineering best practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with product, engineering, and domain/clinical stakeholders.
  • Strong ownership mentality and ability to operate effectively in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in healthcare technology, health-tech, clinical software, or other highly regulated/high-trust environments.
  • Experience at a modern, rapidly scaling startup, preferably Series A–F.
  • Previous experience working on AI-enabled products or automation platforms.
  • Experience working in a remote or distributed engineering environment.
  • Experience designing and operating AWS serverless systems at scale.
  • Experience working on products where reliability, safety, privacy, and user trust are critical.
Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior/staff-level engineer who thrives in an early-stage startup environment.

You should be comfortable moving between architecture, backend services, frontend development, infrastructure, and product discussions. You enjoy taking ownership rather than waiting for detailed instructions, and you're comfortable making thoughtful technical decisions when the path isn't fully defined.

You should also be genuinely interested in AI—not simply as a development tool, but as a technology capable of fundamentally improving how users interact with software and how complex workflows are automated.

We're Looking For Someone Who:
  • Takes ownership from concept through production.
  • Has strong product and engineering judgment.
  • Is comfortable working across the stack.
  • Has experience collaborating closely with other engineers rather than working exclusively independently.
  • Enjoys using AI tools as part of their daily engineering workflow.
  • Can balance speed with quality, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Communicates concerns and technical risks early.
  • Is comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Wants meaningful influence over product direction and engineering culture.
Work Environment

This is an early-stage startup environment where engineers have significant ownership and are expected to contribute beyond a narrowly defined job description.

The engineering team works collaboratively across the stack, with a strong emphasis on shipping high-quality products, moving quickly, and continuously improving systems and processes.

Candidates should be comfortable operating in an environment that may require more flexibility and engagement than a traditional 9-to-5 engineering role.

Why Join

This is an opportunity to join an early-stage healthcare technology company at a pivotal stage of growth.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Build technology addressing significant operational challenges in healthcare.
  • Work on meaningful products that directly impact hospitals, patients, caregivers, and clinical teams.
  • Help shape how AI and automation are applied in high-trust healthcare environments.
  • Work closely with a lean, experienced team where individual contributions have significant impact.
  • Influence architecture, engineering practices, product development, and company culture.
  • Take ownership of projects from idea through production.
  • Join a company with early traction and strong backing from healthcare-focused investors.
Important Candidate Considerations

Candidates should have demonstrated experience working in collaborative startup environments. Candidates whose experience is exclusively with large, legacy, or slow-moving organizations may not be the best fit for this opportunity.

The company is particularly interested in engineers with sustained experience in modern technology environments rather than candidates with frequent short-term contracts or a pattern of job hopping.

Candidates whose technical background is primarily focused on .NET, C#, or legacy backend technologies are not aligned with the core technical requirements of this search.

Candidates whose startup experience consists exclusively of working as a solo founder are also unlikely to be the right fit; the role requires demonstrated experience collaborating as part of an engineering team.
