What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Architectural Animator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Architectural Animator, you need strong 3D modeling and rendering skills, a solid understanding of architectural design principles, and proficiency with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Expertise in software like Autodesk 3ds Max, SketchUp, Blender, and rendering engines such as V-Ray or Lumion is typically required. Excellent communication, creativity, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for effectively collaborating with clients and design teams remotely. These abilities are vital to accurately visualize architectural concepts, meet client expectations, and deliver high-quality animations in a remote work environment.

How does a remote architectural animation professional typically collaborate with architects and project teams?

Remote architectural animation professionals often work closely with architects, designers, and project managers through virtual meetings, file sharing platforms, and collaborative design tools. Regular communication is key, as feedback cycles can involve multiple stakeholders and revisions. Many teams use project management software to track progress and share updates, ensuring alignment on design intent and client requirements. Effective collaboration requires strong digital communication skills and the ability to adapt to varying workflows and time zones.

What is remote architectural animation?

Remote architectural animation is the process of creating detailed 3D visualizations and animated walkthroughs of architectural designs from a remote location, without being physically present at the project site. These animations help architects, designers, and clients visualize a building or interior space before it is constructed. Using specialized software, professionals bring blueprints and concepts to life, enabling better communication, marketing, and decision-making throughout the design process. Remote work allows for collaboration with clients and teams worldwide, leveraging digital tools for efficient project delivery.

About the Company:
Founded in 2017 by Anthony and Joe Russo, AGBO is an artist-led independent studio shaping the future of film and television. The Russo Brothers and AGBO have generated more than $7 billion at the global box office, including Avengers: Endgame. The studio's projects include Academy Award-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, Netflix hits The Gray Man and Extraction, and Prime Video's visceral thriller The Bluff and the global Citadel franchise. Citadel Season 2 premieres in May 2026.
AGBO is currently in production with Netflix on Tygo and Mercenary, both part of the Extraction universe, as well as with Lionsgate on John Rambo, a prequel to the iconic franchise. The studio is in post-production on The Whisper Man, starring Robert De Niro, and Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released December 18, 2026. AGBO will begin shooting Avengers: Secret Wars later this year. Both upcoming Avengers films are directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and co-produced by AGBO and Marvel Studios.
Position Summary:
AGBO is seeking a Principal Animation Engineer to lead the technical vision and development of animation systems for our interactive projects. This role focuses on building scalable, high-performance animation architecture that supports expressive, responsive, and emotionally resonant gameplay.
As a Principal Animation Engineer, you will define the technical direction for animation systems across the project-owning core runtime architecture and partnering closely with Animation, Design, and Technical Art. You'll play a critical role in ensuring our character performance and gameplay feel meet the cinematic and storytelling standards.
This role is preferred based in Raleigh, NC, but open to fully remote candidates.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Define and lead the technical strategy for animation systems within Unreal Engine (UE5), ensuring scalability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Architect and implement advanced runtime animation systems including state machines, animation blueprints, motion matching, locomotion systems, blending frameworks, and procedural solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with animators to ensure animation content integrates seamlessly and performs optimally in-engine.
  • Establish and communicate best practices for animation pipelines, performance optimization, replication, and networked animation systems.
  • Serve as the primary technical partner to Animation leadership, translating creative goals into sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and proactively implement solutions to maintain high frame-rate targets.
  • Partner with Design and Gameplay Engineering to ensure tight integration between animation systems, combat mechanics, and player controls.
  • Contribute to tooling improvements and workflow enhancements that increase iteration speed and team efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • 10+ years of professional experience in gameplay or animation engineering, with multiple shipped titles and at least one in a senior or principal capacity.
  • Significant professional experience as an Animation Engineer on at least one shipped UE4 or UE5 title.
  • Experience developing animation systems for a third-person game, with strong understanding of locomotion, combat, and character responsiveness.
  • Deep expertise in C++ and Unreal Engine animation frameworks (Animation Blueprints, Montages, Blend Spaces, Control Rig, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of character movement, camera systems, and player input responsiveness.
  • Experience optimizing animation systems for performance across platforms.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor other engineers.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to non-engineering partners.

Bonus Skills:
  • Experience with motion matching, procedural animation, IK systems, or advanced locomotion frameworks.
  • Familiarity with network replication for character animation systems.
  • Experience working on narrative-driven or cinematic gameplay experiences.
  • Background in early-stage or prototype development environments.
