Remote Aac Specialist information

How much do remote AAC specialists make?

Remote AAC specialists typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and the employer. Salaries can vary based on location, with higher pay often available in regions with a higher cost of living, and may include benefits such as flexible schedules and professional development opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote AAC specialist?

To thrive as a Remote AAC Specialist, you need a background in speech-language pathology or a related field, with expertise in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. Familiarity with AAC devices, relevant software, and telepractice platforms, as well as certifications like ASHA's CCC-SLP, are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and empathy are essential soft skills for effectively supporting clients and collaborating with caregivers or educational teams remotely. These skills ensure that clients receive personalized, effective communication support and intervention, even in virtual settings.

What is a remote AAC specialist?

Remote AAC Specialists are professionals who provide assessment, support, and training related to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, but do so virtually rather than in person. They work with individuals who have complex communication needs, helping them select and use communication devices or strategies to improve their ability to communicate. Services often include evaluating clients' needs, recommending AAC tools, and offering ongoing coaching to clients, families, and educators—all via telepractice platforms. This remote model allows specialists to reach clients in underserved or rural areas and provides flexibility for both the specialist and client.

How do you become a Remote AAC Specialist?

To become a remote AAC specialist, typically one needs a relevant degree such as speech-language pathology or communication sciences, along with certification like the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence. Experience working with augmentative and alternative communication devices and strong technical skills are also important for remote roles.

What are some common challenges remote AAC specialists face when supporting clients virtually, and how can they be addressed?

Remote AAC Specialists often encounter challenges such as building rapport with clients through a screen, troubleshooting technology issues, and ensuring effective communication with families and support teams. To overcome these obstacles, specialists can use engaging virtual tools, offer clear guidance for device setup, and schedule regular check-ins with caregivers. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams is also key, as it ensures coordinated support and helps address any technical or communication barriers quickly.

At Crisis Connections, we believe that every person deserves compassionate, accessible support during their most difficult moments. As a 988 Crisis Call Specialist, you'll play a vital role in providing life-saving emotional support to individuals experiencing mental health crises-right when they need it most.

If you're empathetic, calm under pressure, and motivated by meaningful work, we invite you to join our growing 988 Crisis Services team.

Why This Role Matters

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is transforming how people access mental health support. In this role, you will be a trusted voice for individuals reaching out via phone, chat or text, offering hope, connection, and practical support during moments of distress.

What You'll Do

As a 988 Crisis Call Specialist, you will:

  • Provide empathetic, nonjudgmental crisis intervention via phone, or chat and text
  • Conduct suicide risk and behavioral health assessments and support de-escalation
  • Collaborate with on-shift clinicians to ensure safety when higher-level intervention is needed
  • Develop safety and action plans with individuals in crisis
  • Connect callers to appropriate community resources and crisis response partners
  • Accurately document interactions in the electronic health record
  • Follow established 988 Lifeline protocols and performance standards
  • Contribute to shared team goals for response times, availability, and quality care

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask across multiple software platforms in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to remain focused and grounded during emotionally intense conversations
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) credential required by the end of the probationary period. Applications must be submitted within 30 days of hire. Crisis Connections will reimburse the cost of obtaining the credential.

Preferred Experience:
