About C-P Systems

Established in 1995 from 3M's Chemical Division, C-P Systems is a process mechanical engineering consulting firm specializing in piping design, P&ID development, process engineering, laser scanning, and construction documentation for industrial clients across the United States.

We're a team of engineers and support staff who take pride in doing things right. Our low turnover reflects a culture built on trust, long-term relationships, and a genuine commitment to quality for our customers and for each other.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced piping designer who is stepping back from full-time work but is not ready to stop designing. The work is hands-on design on active projects, combined with time spent helping our less experienced designers get better at it.

The engagement level is flexible for this role and current similar roles. Some of our part-time technical staff are on call for specific expertise as little as few hours a month. Others work up to 20-30 hours a week on active projects.

Our main software tools are Autodesk AutoCAD Plant 3D, ReCap, Navisworks, and Inventor, along with Intergraph SmartPlant P&ID and Smart 3D. Familiarity with these is not required. Someone with a strong piping design and industrial background can be trained on the software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with clients and engineers to understand project requirements.
  • 3D modeling of process equipment, instrumentation, and piping.
  • Review drawings, models, and construction packages before they are issued.
  • Work through layout and constructability problems with our engineers and designers.
  • Mentor less experienced designers on the field realities that do not show up in the model, use of software, and how to run projects from a design standpoint.
  • Participate in design reviews with customers, typically in Navisworks.
  • Work with engineering team to help model processes with the end deliverable being a complete mechanical bid package for construction.

Qualifications

  • Extensive career experience (10-15 years +) in industrial or chemical process piping design
  • Strong grounding in plant layout, constructability, and applicable codes and standards
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting
  • Interest in reviewing other people's work and teaching what you know
  • US Citizenship (required by some of our customers)

Compensation and Benefits

Rate: $40 to $60/hr, based on experience

Why Join Us

C-P Systems has been doing this work since 1995. Our turnover is low and our customers stay with us for a straightforward reason: we do the work right and we are honest about what a project takes.

If you are ready to step back from a full schedule but still want to be in the middle of an interesting variety of projects, this is a way to do that without the corporate overhead that usually comes with it.
