Job description

The General Manager of Asphalt Paving, Production, and Aggregate Operations provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all aspects of the asphalt paving business, including asphalt production plants, aggregate quarries, milling operations, and trucking. This position is responsible for driving operational excellence, financial performance, customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and employee development while supporting the organization's long-term growth objectives.

Responsibilities

The General Manager, Asphalt Paving, Production and Aggregate Operations will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and operational direction for asphalt paving operations, asphalt production facilities, aggregate quarries, milling operations, and trucking activities.
  • Direct daily operations and long-term planning, coordinating personnel, equipment, and resources to maximize productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor business strategies that improve performance, reduce costs, enhance quality, and support sustainable profitability.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with public and private customers, including Departments of Transportation, municipalities, counties, commercial contractors, and private clients.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key customer accounts and resolve escalated issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Lead financial management activities including budgeting, forecasting, cost control, profit and loss accountability, and financial performance analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state/provincial, and local regulations related to safety, environmental standards, and operational requirements.
  • Identify and implement innovative technologies, materials, and best practices that improve operational performance and maintain industry competitiveness.
  • Recruit, mentor, coach, and develop employees while fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, respect, and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate employee training and development programs to ensure technical competency and leadership growth.
  • Prepare and present operational and financial performance reports to executive leadership and recommend strategic adjustments based on business conditions.
  • Oversee supply chain activities, inventory management, and vendor relationships while negotiating favorable supplier agreements.
  • Represent the organization at industry associations, trade events, customer meetings, and community engagement activities.
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, operational efficiency, environmental stewardship, and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Skills
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in asphalt paving, asphalt production, aggregate operations, or related construction materials industries.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of senior management experience overseeing multiple operational functions and teams.
  • Strong financial acumen with demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, and profit optimization.
  • Extensive knowledge of asphalt production, paving operations, aggregate extraction, trucking logistics, and equipment management.
  • Thorough understanding of industry safety standards, OSHA/MSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and quality assurance practices.
  • Proven ability to lead large, diverse teams while managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, customer relationship management, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong strategic planning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency with construction estimating software, scheduling systems, ERP platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, and other business management applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership style that promotes accountability, collaboration, and employee engagement.
  • Valid driver's license.
