Relief Veterinary Technicians often work in a variety of clinics, each with its own workflows, equipment, and team dynamics. Adapting quickly to new settings can be challenging, especially when learning different protocols and software systems. However, this role offers the chance to build flexibility and broaden clinical experience. Strong communication skills and a proactive approach to asking questions help relief techs integrate smoothly into each team and provide high-quality patient care.

What does a relief veterinary technician do?

As a relief veterinary technician, your job is to help a veterinary facility by providing extra support when they need it most. Staffing needs are often uncertain for emergency services, including animal hospitals, so most facilities prefer to have at least a few employees who can come in to help a client as needed. In this role, you may provide physical and emotional care for a pet, help handle emotionally upset patients, implement appropriate animal husbandry skills, alert veterinarians to signs of pain, and otherwise provide help and support as needed. This is usually a part-time job working on-call, so your actual hours can vary by employer.

What is a relief veterinary technician?

Relief veterinary technicians are trained veterinary professionals who temporarily fill in for regular staff at animal hospitals, clinics, or other veterinary facilities. They work on a contract or per diem basis, often covering shifts when permanent technicians are unavailable due to vacations, illness, or staffing shortages. Relief technicians perform the same duties as regular veterinary technicians, such as assisting veterinarians, handling animals, administering medications, and performing laboratory tests. Their flexibility helps practices maintain quality care for patients and smooth clinic operations during staffing gaps.
