Job description

Plant Turbine & Generator Engineer/Maintenance Specialist

This position will support both APC Plant Central AL and Lindsay Hill, located in Billingsley, AL

Summary of Position:

The Turbine & Generator Engineer/Maintenance Specialist provides technical, maintenance, and operational support for steam turbines, gas turbines, generators, and associated auxiliary systems at Lindsay Hill and Central Alabama combined cycle generating plants in Billingsley, AL. This role serves as the subject matter expert for turbine and generator systems and is responsible for equipment reliability, maintenance strategy development, outage execution, and long-term asset planning.

Working closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, and technical support teams, this position supports safe, reliable, and cost-effective plant operation by monitoring equipment condition, evaluating reliability issues, developing repair recommendations, and supporting root cause analysis and corrective actions.

Responsibilities include developing and executing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, supporting outage planning and contractor coordination, managing capital and O&M projects, and providing engineering evaluations and system improvement recommendations. The role also supports long-term maintenance and capital budgeting in coordination with plant financial analysts.

This position promotes standardized maintenance practices, compliance with safety and environmental requirements, and may provide support for additional plant systems or facilities as needed.

Education Requirements:

This position may be filled at either the Engineer or Maintenance Specialist level. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the level at which they are hired:

Engineer

Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required.

Maintenance Specialist

High school diploma or GED required.

The successful candidate's placement will be based on experience, qualifications, and business needs.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of recent utility-scale turbine maintenance or operations experience preferred
  • Fundamental knowledge of turbines and generators
  • Experience with turbine and generator system equipment is preferred
  • Experience in valve diagnostics preferred
  • Experience in implementing maintenance strategies and inspections on mechanical power plant equipment is strongly desired.
  • Experience with Long Term Service Agreements strongly desired
  • Combined cycle experience desired
  • Proven risk assessment and decision-making skills

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage service agreements and contracts, in particular Long Term Service Agreements
  • Perform routine equipment walkdowns and generate service claims, as needed, for Long Term Service Agreement covered equipment. 
  • Outage/project management, project budget management, long-term maintenance strategies, development of procedures and technical support to the plant
  • Initiate, troubleshoot and review root cause analyses for system equipment failures
  • Work with Southern Company Services, OEM's and system owners at other plants to stay current of any upgrades or concerns that affect the plant and communicate these needs to plant management, corporate management, and peer groups
  • Prioritize, monitor and review routine and outage work on turbine/generator and process steam across supported units
  • Lead and support turbine, generator and associated equipment inspections across supported units
  • Evaluate general quality and completeness of contractor and LTSA work
  • Coordinate offsite manufacturing, vendor support and shop repair surveillance activities
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with turbine and generator vendors, contractors, and technical support personnel
  • Support standardization, best practice sharing and continuous improvement efforts across the Southern Company fleet. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven leadership skills
  • Good oral/written communication skills and ability to work effectively with varied individuals (craft personnel, support staff, supervisory staff, and management) is a must
  • Strong organizational, administrative, time management, project management, facilitation and analytical skills are required
  • Self-motivation and demonstrated initiative are crucial for this position
  • Ability to interface with vendors and contractors while representing the best interests of Southern Company
  • Must possess a basic mechanical aptitude and have a good understanding of power plant systems
  • A good working knowledge of various mechanical equipment operation and maintenance is preferred.
  • A basic understanding of plant electrical systems is preferred
  • Good computer skills
  • Ability to appropriately prioritize, plan and manage multiple work activities simultaneously is required. 
  • A basic understanding of hydraulic systems is preferred.
  • Ability to read mechanical and P&ID drawings. 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be able to work independently with no supervision or as a member of a team with directions, as required.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends and/or holidays as needed
  • May require some extended work hours, particularly during planned or unplanned maintenance. 
  • Must be able to be on call for the plant for specified rotation frequencies

  • Minimal travel required.
