Job description

Job Title: Utility Foreman - Relay
Work Place Flexibility: Onsite

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:
Utility Foreman - Relay is primarily responsible for supervising and performing installations, maintenance and testing of substation protective systems and SCADA systems. The relay foreman will supervise emergency activities associated with the restoration of relay and substation equipment. The relay foreman promotes safe work behaviors and actions from all assigned crews. The relay foreman provides a professional point of contact for contractors and internal/external customers. The relay foreman must be available for callouts and extended hours.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise and perform all aspects of installation and maintenance of substation protective systems
  • Supervise and perform all aspects of installation and maintenance of substation SCADA systems
  • Supervise and organize emergency activities associated with the restoration of relay and/or substation equipment
  • Provide field training to relay crews on a wide array of protective devices, schemes and philosophies
  • Assist crews in performing relay and SCADA testing and commissioning
  • Provide a professional point of contact for contractors, internal/external customers, and design groups
  • Ensures compliance with Configuration Management and system protection regulatory procedures and processes
  • Facilitate and support activities associated with the realization of departmental and company goals
  • Assure a safe work environment exists and actively and progressively require safe work behaviors and actions from all assigned crews

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or related work experience.
  • Preferred: 2-year technical degree in Electronics/Instrumentation

Minimum Experience:
  • At least 5 years of experience in the electric utility industry, or in a related industrial field
  • Preferred:
    • 5-10 years of experience in electrical substation maintenance or construction
    • Experience in leading construction and maintenance of transmission relay protection schemes
    • Experience with leading on-call/after-hours response to substation equipment and line outages on the transmission system
    • Experience in storm restoration of transmission substations

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Able to work with little direction with a high level of organization to accomplish multiple projects simultaneously
  • Must be available for 24-hour callout and extended hours
  • Must be certified and able to perform substation switching
  • Preferred:
    • Proficient in transmission relay protection schemes including: Power Line Zone Distance Protection, Permissive and Blocking Schemes, Transformer and Bus Differential Protection, Fiber Optic Communication Schemes, Power Line Carrier Schemes
    • Proficient with RTU SCADA programming (GE: D20, D25, D400 ; SEL RTAC)
    • Proficient with microprocessor based relay applications ( SEL Engineering, GE, ABB)
