Job description

Who We Are
Roots is a wealth-building platform built on a simple belief: everyone deserves a real path to financial growth, and that path should feel achievable.
We create simple, accessible ways for people to participate in ownership and invest in real assets, making wealth-building more engaging and within reach. Today, Roots is a growing ecosystem that combines an investment platform, financial tools, and education to support long-term financial progress.
We're already helping a rapidly growing community take meaningful steps toward building wealth, and we've seen that when the experience feels intuitive and rewarding, people actually stick with it. That's what we're continuing to build.
Why We Need You
As our real estate portfolio has grown to more than 1,500 single-family rental homes across multiple states, we're building a finance function that reflects the complexity of owning and operating institutional-quality real estate.
This is a new role on our Accounting team that will work day-to-day alongside our President of Real Estate, helping bridge accounting and operations as we continue to scale.
You'll own the financial reporting and portfolio accounting for our REIT, sitting at the intersection of property-level accounting and portfolio-level financial reporting. Working closely with third-party property management companies, you'll ensure accurate, timely, and well-organized financial data that supports internal decision-making, investor reporting, and the continued growth of our portfolio.
This is a highly operational role for someone who enjoys owning monthly close processes, reconciling data from multiple sources, and transforming property management data into clean, standardized financial reporting. You'll primarily support management accounting and internal reporting while ensuring our books and financial statements remain GAAP compliant.
Role Responsibilities
  • Maintain monthly portfolio schedules, including acquisitions, dispositions, and portfolio changes across our single-family rental portfolio.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records at both the property and portfolio levels.
  • Record and track annual replacement reserves and other portfolio-level adjustments.
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for third-party property management companies.
  • Collect, review, and reconcile monthly financial information, including rent rolls, income statements, trial balances, invoices, and supporting documentation.
  • Follow up with variance analysis on discrepancies, missing information, and reporting delays to keep month-end close on schedule.
  • Prepare monthly portfolio reporting and consolidated financial statements for internal leadership.
  • Support investor reporting, Regulation A reporting requirements, audits, tax preparation, and other financial reporting needs.
  • Partner closely with the President of Real Estate, acquisitions, and finance teams to ensure portfolio activity is accurately reflected in financial reporting.
  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules during month-end close.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, internal controls, and automation as we continue to scale.
  • Perform ad hoc financial analyses and reporting to support operational and investment decisions.
  • Own the accuracy and integrity of portfolio financial data, proactively identifying issues and driving them to resolution.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably within real estate, property management, fund accounting, or a REIT.
  • Strong understanding of property accounting principles and month-end close processes.
  • Experience reconciling and consolidating financial information from multiple external sources.
  • Experience working with residential real estate portfolios, preferably single-family rentals.
  • Familiarity with REIT accounting and financial reporting is preferred.
  • Experience with Yardi, AppFolio, Sage, or similar accounting software is a plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and financial analysis.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage recurring monthly deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Highly analytical with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities evolve.
  • Excited to build new processes and help establish a scalable real estate accounting function.
How We Work
Our values show up in how we work: we take ownership, stay curious, communicate clearly, use resources wisely, treat people fairly, and aren't afraid to challenge how things have always been done.
At Roots, we're committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all individuals, regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. We firmly believe that diversity fuels creativity and innovation, enhancing the quality of our work and the strength of our team. Join us and be part of an inclusive environment where every perspective is valued.
