SummaryThe AVP - Inforce Management reports to the VP, Inforce Management and serves as a strategic leader within the Inforce Management function. This role is accountable for the strategy and end-to-end execution of key inforce management capabilities to drive sustainable profitability, policyholder value, and competitiveness across the Life and Annuities blocks of business. The role may manage actuarial staff; in all cases, it leads complex, cross-functional initiatives from concept through implementation.
The position combines deep actuarial expertise, extensive business acumen, and strategic leadership to translate complex analysis into clear management insights and actionable recommendations. With significant latitude for independent judgment, the role advises senior management and makes or recommends decisions that can have major and measurable long-term impact on profitability, growth, policyholder outcomes, and enterprise risk. The role establishes priorities, challenges assumptions, identifies emerging risks and opportunities, and connects results to broader business outcomes.
This role requires active enterprise collaboration across Product Development, Finance, Investments, Corporate Actuarial, Legal, and other stakeholders to ensure aligned and effective execution of inforce strategies. The role independently evaluates trade-offs, develops and manages senior-level relationships, and influences policy, strategic direction, and decision-making through clear recommendations, transparent communication, and accountability for outcomes.
Key Functional Responsibilities

• Owns and translates actuarial analysis into clear business insights, management-quality reporting, and actionable recommendations that influence decisions by senior management and cross-functional enterprise stakeholders.
• Establishes and recommends Life NGE and other inforce rate actions, implements decisions within delegated authority, and clearly communicates trade-offs among profitability, competitiveness, policyholder value, risk, and broader enterprise objectives.
• Proactively challenges assumptions, identifies emerging risks and opportunities, and provides alternative perspectives to improve the quality of strategic choices.
• Leads or contributes to reinsurance strategies and execution, evaluating implications for profitability, capital, risk, policyholders, and the broader inforce value chain.
• Owns the strategic direction and end-to-end execution of high-value, complex Inforce Management initiatives, with accountability for execution quality and measurable business outcomes.
• Oversees experience-study strategy, methodology, controls, and interpretation to support pricing, assumption governance, inforce management, and strategic business decisions.
• Owns the strategy, governance framework, methodology, execution, controls, documentation, and communication supporting Life NGEs and IA testing. Leads the work supporting the designated actuary's NGE certification and Illustration Actuary responsibilities and is accountable for its completeness, accuracy, timeliness, issue resolution, and readiness for sign-off; formal certification and signatory accountability remain with the designated actuary. Translates results into clear implications and recommendations for senior management and appropriate governance forums.
• May manage and develop actuarial staff in Inforce Management, setting priorities, coaching talent, building succession and capability plans, and creating accountability for sustained performance.
• Provides insight into key drivers of policyholder behavior and their implications for profitability, conservation, product performance, policyholder outcomes, and other inforce management decisions.
• Provides actuarial expertise to support product filings and regulatory alignment and leads strategic initiatives aligned with evolving business priorities.
• Contributes to broader L&A and company strategy and translates that direction into a two- to four-year Inforce Management roadmap, objectives, priorities, and measures of success.

• Builds and manages enterprise partnerships across L&A Solutions, Corporate Actuarial, Finance, Investments, Legal, and other functions; independently frames trade-offs and influences senior leaders toward shared business outcomes.
• Regularly leads complex, cross-functional initiatives through concept, planning, execution, and implementation and ensures timely communication of decisions, risks, outcomes, and lessons learned.
• Builds thought leadership by anticipating external actuarial, regulatory, market, and industry trends; shares perspectives across National Life Group and represents the company in external professional or industry forums as appropriate.
• Lead and develop direct reports by fostering and supporting career development, motivating, engaging and capitalizing on employee strengths.
• Build cross-functional partnerships with other business units and teams throughout the organization (L&A Solutions - Product Development, Corporate Actuarial, Finance, Investments, Legal) using clear communications and transparency.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with staff to facilitate open dialogue within group and cascade appropriate communications.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance or related field
• Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries (FSA)
• 8+ years of actuarial or equivalent experience in roles of progressively increasing responsibility.
• Deep knowledge of applicable Statutory, Tax, and GAAP requirements and the regulatory environment affecting Life and Annuities inforce management.
• Strong financial modeling experience using actuarial software, preferably MG-ALFA, and demonstrated ability to evaluate financial, capital, risk, policyholder, and business implications.
• Extensive and successful experience leading high-value, complex projects or processes and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Demonstrated experience owning or leading complex inforce actuarial capabilities, including Life NGEs, IA testing, profitability analysis, experience studies, and related governance and controls
• Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate trade-offs, translate complex actuarial analysis into senior-management recommendations, and lead decisions with significant enterprise implications.
• Expert communication skills, strategic thinking, enterprise perspective, and extensive business acumen..

Base Pay Range. The base pay range for this position is the range National Life reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for the position taking into account the wide variety of factors, including: prior experience and job-related knowledge; education, training and certificates; current business needs; and market factors. The final salary or hourly wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances.
Additional Compensation and Benefits. The total compensation package for this position may also include a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. The successful candidate may also be eligible to participate in National Life's discretionary annual incentive programs, subject to the rules governing such programs. If hired, the employee will be in an "at-will position" and National Life reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
