What is a reinforcement learning intern?

A Reinforcement Learning (RL) Intern is responsible for researching, developing, and testing RL algorithms to solve complex problems. They typically work on tasks such as implementing reinforcement learning models, optimizing reward functions, and running experiments in simulated environments. Interns collaborate with researchers and engineers to refine models and improve the efficiency of RL systems. They usually have experience in machine learning, deep learning, and programming languages like Python. The role provides hands-on experience in applying RL techniques to real-world applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reinforcement learning intern?

To thrive as a Reinforcement Learning Intern, you need strong knowledge of machine learning fundamentals, programming proficiency (usually in Python), and a background in mathematics or computer science, often demonstrated through academic coursework or relevant projects. Familiarity with popular machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and RL-specific frameworks like OpenAI Gym is typically expected. Effective problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly are valuable soft skills in this position. These capabilities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to research and development efforts, bridging theory and practical application in real-world reinforcement learning projects.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a reinforcement learning intern?

As a Reinforcement Learning Intern, you will typically work on tasks such as designing, implementing, and testing reinforcement learning algorithms, analyzing experimental results, and assisting with data preprocessing or environment development. You may also collaborate with senior researchers and engineers, participate in code reviews, and contribute to technical discussions or team meetings. In many organizations, interns are given the chance to work on real-world problems—ranging from optimizing robotic control systems to enhancing recommendation engines. This hands-on experience not only builds your technical expertise but also helps you develop valuable teamwork and communication skills, preparing you for a future career in AI or machine learning.

Job description

The Organization

At TWG Group Holdings, LLC ("TWG Global"), we drive innovation and business transformation across a diverse portfolio-including investments, finance, insurance, and media-by leveraging data and AI as core assets. Our AI-first, cloud-native approach delivers real-time intelligence and interactive business applications, empowering informed decision-making for both customers and employees.

We prioritize responsible data and AI practices, ensuring ethical standards and regulatory compliance. Our decentralized structure enables each business unit to operate autonomously, supported by the central AI Solutions Group, while strategic partnerships with leading data and AI vendors fuel transformative projects in marketing, operations, and product development.

You will collaborate with management to advance our data and analytics transformation, enhance productivity, and enable agile, data-driven decisions. By leveraging relationships with top tech startups and universities, you will help create competitive advantages and drive industry innovation.

At TWG Global, your contributions will support our goal of sustained growth and superior returns, as we deliver significant value and impact across our businesses.

The Role

As a Data Science Intern on the SOLT (Simulation Optimization and Reinforcement Learning) team, you will help design, build, and test production AI systems that power business workflows across a diversified portfolio. You will be assigned to active use cases based on team needs at the time, gaining hands-on experience across the full range of the team's work-spanning areas such as predictive modeling, time series forecasting, reinforcement learning, optimization, and LLM-powered applications. You will operate with unusual scope for an intern: real business problems and work that ships to production.

You will train as a forward-deployed data scientist, working under the guidance of experienced data scientists and ML engineers and alongside the businesses we serve-developing skills in predictive modeling, experimentation, and optimization while contributing to LLM-powered products. You will gain direct exposure to business stakeholders and learn to translate complex business workflows into working AI systems.

This is a hands-on technical internship: you will spend most of your time building, testing, and evaluating models and applications, contributing to a culture of rapid iteration, rigorous evaluation, and responsible AI.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to business problems from ambiguity to production: help operating teams frame the question, build the models and applications that answer it, and support shipping them into daily business workflows.
  • Assist in building predictive models (including time series forecasting), experimentation frameworks, optimization, and reinforcement learning systems-turning business data into decision-ready insight for business leaders.
  • Contribute to production LLM applications: structured extraction from complex documents, retrieval-augmented generation, conversational AI, multi-step orchestration, and rigorous evaluation.
  • Explore emerging AI techniques and tools (e.g., foundation models, intelligent agents and agentic workflows, Graph AI, LLM evaluation frameworks, vector databases, RAG architectures) through hands-on prototyping and benchmarking.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, and experiment design to uncover patterns and rigorously measure impact.
  • Collaborate with team members and business stakeholders to understand workflows and translate business requirements into technical tasks.
  • Maintain documentation of your work and contribute to the measurement and reporting of project performance, ensuring adherence to governance and quality standards.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Coursework or project experience in AI/ML, including at least one of: predictive modeling, time series forecasting, experiment design and causal inference, optimization, or reinforcement learning-with strong statistical foundations.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM applications-prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured output parsing, and evaluation-through coursework, research, internships, or personal projects.
  • Proficiency in Python and data science libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with enterprise data and AI platforms (e.g., Palantir Foundry or similar), or cloud-based AI/ML tools.
  • Experience applying data science to real business problems through internships, research collaborations, or industry projects.
  • Exposure to AI/ML governance, ethics, or responsible AI practices.
