Job description

NATURE AND SCOPE

Responsible for the supervision and coordination of the assigned Melt Shop, engage in the production of steel, which would include electric furnace operation, Refractory and continuous casting, and associated duties.

This position reports directly to the General Supervisor, Melting.  While the incumbent is restricted in decision-making in certain areas (major breakdowns, serious labor problems, selection of materials), incumbent is given considerable latitude in the operation of the shift.  Reporting to the incumbent are hourly production workers, along with indirect supervision of the Casting Shift Supervisor on matters involving production flow through the department during offshift operations.

REQUIREMENTS

  • **** Must have 5 years' in steelmaking methods and techniques to include
  • **** Basic metallurigical knowledge; broad melt shop background equivalent
  • **** Experience in ARC Furnace and continuous casting operations
  • Operation of cranes and other heavy equipment
  • Ability to diagnose and oversee repair of breakdown maintenance problems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for safe, effective, and efficient use of manpower and materials producting the maximum amount of quality steel at the lowest cost
  • Directs melting personnel in the performance of some mechanical maintenance functions; in coordination with the Maintenance Supervisor
  • Oversees the maintenance repair function that occurs in the Melt Shop
  • Assists, instructs, directs, and trains personnel in the operational procedures involved in the melting process
  • Direct responsibility for insuring that all environmental guidelines are followed
  • Incumbent is responsible for filling out the furnace heat logs and other production and supervisory reports as required. 
  • Incumbent must communicate with the previous shift supervisor as to the condition of equipment, to the General Supervisor and Superintendent concerning any special problems or instructions, and with the laboratory personnel concerning the chemical analysis of steel to be produced.
  • Problems associated with this position would include equipment failure, improper scrap selection, and inadequate housekeeping practices, with the main challenge of this position being the maintenance of work flow through the melting and casting department so as to safely obtain the optimum production of quality steel for the least possible cost.
  • Responsibities include production of prescribed quality of product, safe production of scheduled tons of steel.  Proper, efficient, and effective work methods, educationg personnel of hazards associated with melting operations and monitoring performance of duties by employees to insure safe job procedures are being followed.
  • Proper operation, preventive maintenance, and utilization of equipment to prevent damage and minimize repair and for the diagnosis and subsequent solution of breakdown problems.
  • Responsible for employee selection, training, evaluation, and discipline and for the safety of employees and for effectively administering safety programs.
